Volleyball splits opening matches

Hanover College’s volleyball squad split two matches to tip off its 2012 campaign. The Panthers rallied to notch a 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-14 victory against Rhodes College (Tenn.) in the season-opener. The team fell to Maryville College (Tenn.), 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14, in the nightcap.

The matches were played Friday, August 31, as part of the  Maryville Invitational in Maryville, Tenn.

In the win against Rhodes, senior outside hitter Ashleigh Burakiewicz (Greenwood, Ind.) totaled 10 kills to lead Hanover’s attack. Sophomore middle hitter Sarah Hasewinkel (Zionsville, Ind.) and senior outside hitter Sarah Quebe (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied seven kills apiece.

Junior defensive specialist Kylie Justus (Crawfordsville, Ind.) had 24 digs and Hasewinkel posted three solo blocks to key the Panthers’ defense.

Freshman setter Alli Deaton (Lexington, Ky.) had four aces, while Burakiewicz added three for Hanover.

In the battle with tourney host Maryville, Quebe amassed a match-high 12 kills, while freshman middle hitter Nicole Hoene (Seymour, Ind.) added eight.

Junior setter Kelsey Wagner (Taylor Mill, Ky.) fueled the offense with 19 assists and also had three aces.

Justus piled up 26 digs and freshman return specialist Maddie Hartman (Madison, Ind.) added 10 for the Panthers (1-1).
