Freshman Alex Hanke (Evansville, Ind.) scored his first collegiate goal, but Hanover College’s men’s soccer team fell to Asbury University (Ky.), 5-1, in its season-opener.
The match, which marked the debut for Hanover’s first-year head coach Matt Wilkerson, was played Friday, August 31, in Wilmore, Ky.
Asbury, now 2-1, scored three times in the opening 30 minutes of action to grab control of the match. Sophomore midfielder Adam Howard scored twice and senior forward Jonathan Rehner added another to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Senior forward Trent Popp scored to bump Asbury’s lead to 4-0 in the 48th minute.
Hanke, a midfielder, hit the back of the net with an unassisted goal in the 57th minute to get Hanover on the scoreboard.
Asbury sophomore midfielder Garrett Davis scored in the 68th minute for the final margin.
