Five different players scored as the Hanover College women’s soccer team topped St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, 5-0, in a non-conference match-up. The match was held Wednesday, Sept. 5, in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Panthers controlled the ball on the offensive end for most of the first period without finding the goal before freshman forward Anne-Spicer Adams (Midway, Ky.) sank a solo shot in the 21st minute, scoring for the second consecutive game-winner.
Sophomore forward Hannah Barker (Carmel, Ind.) also scored for the second consecutive game, dropping a chip shot over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms early in the 32nd minute.
Midfielder Sarah Lathrop (Indianapolis, Ind.), a senior, closed the half by converting an Ashley Turner (Indianapolis, Ind.) assist for a short lob over the keeper.
A strong offensive half resulted in 15 shots on goal and five corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Butcher (Lafayette, Ind.) recorded two saves in the period.
The offensive barrage continued in the second period, as the Panthers launched 17 shots on goal.
Freshman center-mid Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched her second goal of the season by drawing the keeper from the box and dropping the ball in the upper corner.
The Panthers suffered placed several near misses, before sophomore midfielder Bianca Cotter (Indianapolis, Ind.) sank a cross from the right side to close out the scoring.
Senior goalie Bethann Hancock (Lexington, Ky.) only faced two serious threats, drawing a block and save on both encounters in the second period.
The win improves the Panther record to 3-0, while St. Mary of the Woods begins the year 0-1.
