A penalty kick by junior forward John Wittich (West Chester, Ohio) in the 68th minute proved the game-winner as the Hanover College men’s soccer team claimed its first win of the 2012 season.
The Panthers defeated Marian University, 1-0, Saturday, Sept. 8, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
The rain-soaked pitch limited mobility, but Hanover led the major offensive categories, including 17 shots and a 9-8 corner kick advantage.
Marian allowed seven shots in the first period. The Panthers showed a concerted effort to focus on the offensive side of the ball early in the second half, leading to another 10 shots on goal.
Wittich and sophomore midfielder Matt Grau (Cincinnati, Ohio) both took four shots, while three other Hanover players had two or more.
Marian had 16 shots, including five on goal, but were stymied by sophomore goalkeeper John Seewer (Louisville, Ky.) and the Panthers' defense.
Seewer collected five saves to give first-year head coach Matt Wilkerson his first victory with the Panthers (1-2-1).
