Hanover College’s volleyball squad notched two victories to tip off play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference-Ohio Athletic Conference Challenge. The two-day event, which features four schools from each of the two conferences, tipped off Friday, Sept. 21, in Lexington, Ky.
Hanover, now 10-7 this season, opened the round-robin tourney with a four-set win against Baldwin-Wallace University (Ohio). The Panthers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24.
Senior outside hitter Ashleigh Burakiewicz (Greenwood, Ind.) sparked the Panthers with 18 kills.
Junior setter Kelsey Wagner (Taylor Mill, Ky.) posted 25 assists and two aces.
Junior defensive specialist Kylie Justus (Crawfordsville, Ind.) piled up 36 digs.
Hanover swept Capital University (Ohio) in the squad’s second match. The Panthers beat the Crusaders, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16.
Senior outside hitter Sarah Quebe (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the attack with 12 kills.
Freshman setter Alli Deaton (Lexington, Ky.) totaled 24 assists, while freshman return specialist Maddie Hartman (Madison, Ind.) had two aces.
Justus tallied 26 digs and sophomore middle hitter Sarah Hasewinkel (Zionsville, Ind.) had two blocks to key the Panthers’ defense.
The Panthers split their matches on the second day of the tournament.
In the first match of the second day, Hanover faced a familiar opponent in Ohio Northern University. The Panthers, which fell to Ohio Northern 3-0, Sept. 7, took the Polar Bears to four games before falling 25-10, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21.
Hanover claimed a winning record in the Challenge, topping Muskingum University (Ohio) in the tournament finale, 25-14, 16-25, 25-23, 28-26.
