Wittich goal claims overtime victory

A John Wittich (West Chester, Ohio) goal gave the Hanover College men’s soccer team their first overtime victory in four attempts, as the Panthers topped Spalding University 2-1. The match was held Saturday, Sept. 22 at L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

Hanover had previously tied twice and lost once before the victory.

The win closes the nonconference season with a record of 4-3-2.

While Hanover controlled the offensive tempo for most of the game, out-shooting Spalding 12-4, the Panthers suffered near misses before Wittich sank a Matt Flora (Scipio, Ind.) cross to claim the victory in the 98th minute.

Hanover cracked the scoring column first, as junior defender Cory Jones (Danville, Ky.) sank a penalty kick at the 26 minute mark to take a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers held the lead for the rest of the period and the early minutes of the second period, until Spalding’s Hubert Stephen sank a deflection in the 72nd minute.

Two sophomore keepers shared the goal for the Panthers, with John Seewer (Louisville, Ky.) playing the majority of the minutes before leaving the game with an injury. Seewer recorded one save.

Classmate Trevor Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected the win.
