Wittich goal ties Earlham in HCAC clash

The Hanover College and Earlham College men’s soccer teams settled for a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clash, Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Richmond, Ind.

Junior forward John Wittich (West Chester, Ohio) scored early in the 22nd minute to knot the match at 1-1. Freshman midfielder Joaquin Acuna (Santiago, Chile) assisted on the goal, which was Wittich’s team-leading sixth of the season.

Earlham’s Jacob Ebbs scored in the 16th minute to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.

The tightly-contested battle featured more fouls (32) than combined shots and saves (28). Earlham was called for 20 fouls, while the Panthers were whistled for 12.

The Quakers outshot Hanover by a 13-8 margin, including a 10-4 cushion through the second half and two overtime periods. The Panthers had four shots on goal in the match.

Wittich and freshman forward Vicente Munoz (Santiago, Chile) led the Panthers with two shots apiece.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Marks (Oxford, Ohio) had four saves through 110 minutes in the Panthers’ net.

After the tie, Hanover is 4-6-3 overall and 0-3-1 in the Heartland Conference.

The tie was the third for Earlham in its last four matches. The Quakers are now 3-7-3 overall and 0-1-3 in the league.
