Freshman forward Vicente Munoz (Santiago, Chile) scored in the 89th minute to lift Hanover College’s men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Defiance College (Ohio). The Panthers’ season finale was played Saturday, Oct. 27, in Defiance, Ohio.
Munoz converted a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the upper right-hand corner of the net to give Hanover its seventh victory of the season.
The goal by Munoz was his third of the season and second game-winner for the Panthers, which finish the campaign 7-7-4 overall and 3-4-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Defiance outshot Hanover 6-4 in a scoreless first period. The Panthers had a 14-4 advantage on attempts at the net in the second half, including five shots in the final 10 minutes of action.
Hanover had nine shots on goal, with six coming in the second period.
Sophomore forward Matt Flora (North Vernon, Ind.) led Hanover’s attack with four shots. Junior forward John Wittich (West Chester, Ohio), sophomore defender Drew Servais (Carmel, Ind.) and freshman midfielder Joaquin Acuna (Santiago, Chile) each had three shots.
Sophomore goalie Trevor Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) had three saves for the Panthers. He faced just one shot on goal from Defiance in the decisive second half.
The Yellow Jackets end the season 3-15-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the league.
