A double-double from Elyse Weddle (Bloomfield, Ind.) helped the Hanover College women’s basketball team earn a 76-66 victory against Adrian College (Mich.) in the squad's season-opener.
The match-up took place, Friday, Nov. 16, during the first game of the Hanover Classic in Collier Arena.
Sophomore forward Caitlin Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind.) and senior center Courtney Prater (Anderson, Ind.) notched 16 points apiece to help Hanover record its fourth straight win in its season-opener.
Weddle scored eight points in the first half along with six rebounds to spark the Panthers to a 40-30 lead at the break. The junior forward finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bulldogs scored first on an Amy Van Gessel jumper as the two teams traded buckets until a Weddle field goal early in the 12th minute sparked a 13-4 Hanover run.
Bischoff scored five points during this run to put the Panthers ahead for good.
A Jasmine Byers jump-shot pulled Adrian within six with 3:27 remaining in the half before a Bischoff jumper stifled the surge. Bischoff scored five more points in the half to push the Panthers to a 40-30 halftime lead.
The Hanover press forced 17 first-period turnovers and 33 for the game. Bischoff collected six of the Panthers' 11 steals.
Hanover continued their torrid shooting after the intermission, as Prater scored four straight points to begin the half.
Prater scored 10 of her 16 points in the second period, including converting six of seven free-throws.
The Bulldogs pushed within six several times in the second period, but the Panthers responded with a run each time to regain the 10-point lead.
Two free throws from sophomore guard Shauna Watson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) at the 2:26 mark pushed the lead to 69-55 and sealed the game.
Bischoff and Weddle both sank two free throws as the Bulldogs attempted to stop the clock in the waning seconds of the game.
In a physical match-up, the Panthers found the charity stripe 37 times, shooting 78.4%.
The team shot 41.5% from the field, limiting Adrian to a 36.4 field-goal percentage and a 15.4 three-point percentage.
Hanover moves to 1-0 on the season, while Adrian falls to 0-1.
Amber Rice scored 21 points to lead Wittenberg University (Ohio) to a 64-54 victory against Transylvania University (Ky.) in the Hanover Classic's nightcap.
Madisen Webb and Katelyn Smith posted 11 points and seven rebounds apiece for Transylvania.
