Panthers drop Zimmerman consolation to Bethany

Hanover College’s men’s basketball squad lost to Bethany College (W.Va.), 88-71, in the consolation game of Wittenberg University’s Charles Zimmerman Classic. The game was played Saturday, Dec. 29, in Springfield, Ohio.

Senior guard Ryan Nowicki (Westfield, Ohio) scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to lead Hanover. Sophomore swingman Jacob Steinhart (Mount Vernon, Ind.) netted a career-best 11 points and freshman forward Michael Van Kleunen (Mason, Ohio) added 10 for the Panthers (5-6).

James Barton scored 32 points to pace four Bethany players in double figures. Leslie Addy posted 17 points and a game-best 11 rebounds for the Bison (10-2).

Bethany held the lead from wire to wire. The Bison led by as many as 20 points on two occasions in the first period, including a 45-25 margin with 3:55 left in the stanza.

Freshman forward Evan Bingham (Louisville, Ky.) had a tip-in and a three-pointer to key a late burst as Hanover closed the half with a 16-4 run to pull within 49-41 at the break.

The Panthers crept within 49-44 in the opening two minutes of the second period after Van Kleunen scored from inside.

Bethany, however, eased ahead 58-48 with 14:47 left in the contest. Barton and Addy scored seven points apiece as the Bison expanded the margin to 18 points (76-58) with an 18-10 run through the following nine minutes.

Hanover cut the margin to 12 points (78-66) on a Nowicki three-pointer with 3:42 to play. Bethany countered with six straight points to regain the 18-point cushion and the Panthers would get no closer than 16 points (84-68) the rest of the way.

Hanover shot 39.4 percent from the floor (26-of-66), including an 8-of-32 effort from beyond the arc (25%). The Panthers were 11-of-20 from the charity stripe (55%).

Hanover committed just eight turnovers and earned a 36-35 advantage on the boards.
