Hanover College’s men’s tennis team evened its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record at 1-1 with an 8-1 victory against the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio). The HCAC match was held Thursday, March 28, at the Zeddies Tennis Center.
Hanover swept three doubles match to gain an early advantage in the match, then posted wins in five of the six singles match to ring up its first win of the season (1-8).
Sophomore Brian Clark (New Palestine, Ind.) paired with his brother, freshman Reid, for an 8-2 win at No. 2 against Mount St. Joseph’s Tyler Esham and Max Withrow.
Brian Clark later defeated Withrow, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Reid Clark, meanwhile, held off the Lions’ Colin Barrett, 3-6, 6-0, 10-5, at No. 3.
Senior Steven Gilliam (Fishers, Ind.) and freshman Andrew Nice (Salem, Ind.) each recorded two wins in the match.
Gilliam knocked off Mount St. Joseph's Clayton Steinriede, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1. Nice handled John Knoll, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6.
Gilliam and Nice earlier teamed for an 8-6 win against Steinriede and Barrett at No. 1 doubles.
With the loss, Mount St. Joseph fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Heartland Conference.
