El, Bader in hunt, but third round costly in title chase

Hanover College’s men’s golf squad remains in second place in the team standings three-quarters of the way through the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The third round of the 72-hole tournament was held Saturday, May 4, at the Rea Park Golf Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Hanover, just three strokes off the lead after 36 holes, fell to 24 shots off the pace after recording a 314 in the third round. The Panthers (914: 303-297-314) remain behind Transylvania University (Ky.) in the title chase. The Pioneers have totaled an 890 in the event, including a tournament-low 293 in the third round.

Senior Marcus El (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior Robert Bader (Louisville, Ky.)  share second place in the individual standings with a six-over-par 222. Bader turned in a three-over 75 on the par-72, 6,482-yard course, while El posted a five-over 77.

Junior Terry Smith (Peru, Ind.) is 13th among 39 athletes with a 235 (76-81-78). Sophomore Matt Ehmann (Noblesville, Ind.) lurks just behind in the 15th slot at 237 (76-77-84).

Transylvania’s Hunter Frazier leads the individual race by just one stroke. Frazier, who made a hole-in-one on Rea Park’s 150-yard 13th hole, has a three-round total of 221 (71-79-71).

The College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) is third overall in the team standings with a 917 (306-307-304). Franklin College sits fourth with a 955 (318-323-314).
