Hanover College’s volleyball squad tipped off its 2013 campaign with two victories in the first day of action at the Maryville College (Tenn.) Invitational.
Hanover outlasted Rhodes College (Tenn.), 25-18, 25-27, 15-25, 25-21, 15-12, in the first match. The Panthers (2-0) defeated host Maryville, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, later in the day.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Hasewinkel (Sheridan, Ind.) tallied a match-leading 22 kills and sophomore outside hitter Rachel Regenauer (Peewee Valley, Ky.) added 12 to lead Hanover’s attack in the win against Maryville.
Freshman setter Shelby Hart (Crestwood, Ky.), who led both teams with 19, and freshman outside hitter Molly Murphy (Hilliard, Ohio) combined for 31 assists to fuel the offense.
Return specialists Kylie Justus (Crawfordsville, Ind.) and Maddie Hartman (Madison, Ind.) totaled 42 digs to support the defense. Justus, a senior, had a match-best 26 digs. Hartman posted 16.
Sophomore middle hitter Maggie Huffer (Indianapolis, Ind.) paced the Panthers’ front line with three blocks.
In the season-opener against Rhodes, Hanover rebounded from a 2-1 deficit to notch the victory in five sets.
Hasewinkel had 16 kills and Regenauer added 11 to spur the effort at the net.
Hart led the squad with 20 assists and Murphy followed closely with 17.
Justus tallied a match-high 24 digs.
