League opener fades away in final minutes

Hanover College’s football squad carried a lead into the final minutes, but lost 16-13 at the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener.

Hanover held a 13-10 lead late in the fourth period. Mount St. Joseph’s Shane Kelly kicked a 44-yard field goal to tie the game at 13-13 with 3:03 left, then nailed the game-winner from 32 yards out with 14.8 seconds remaining.

A key special teams play and a two-play drive allowed Hanover (0-3; 0-1 HCAC) to get on the scoreboard early in the first quarter.

Freshman receiver Layne Taylor (Sellersburg, Ind.) returned a punt 59 yards give the Panthers possession at the eight-yardline. Two plays later, junior running back Spencer Corrao (New Albany, Ind.) crushed his way into the endzone from the one for a 7-0 lead.

Senior placekicker Dylan Dunlop (Miami, Fla.) booted a 36-yard field goal fewer than two minutes into the second quarter to nudge Hanover ahead 10-7. He added a 41-yard field goal with 6:01 to go in the half for a 13-0 advantage.

Mount St. Joseph (1-1; 1-0 HCAC) scored with three minutes left in half on a 24-yard field goal by Kelly.

The Lions later scored on a 50-yard pass from Caleb Watkins to Eric Love to trim the margin to 13-10 with 9:15 remaining in the third quarter.

Hanover totaled 301 yards of offense. Corrao finished with 96 rushing yards on 18 carries. Senior quarterback Dexter Britt (Louisville, Ky.) completed 13-of-28 passes for 187 yards with an interception.

Taylor caught five passes for 99 yards. Junior receiver Tanner Parker (Greencastle, Ind.) had six catches for 75 yards.

Mount St. Joseph totaled 364 yards of offense, including 210 passing and 154 on the ground.

Senior defensive back Sam Louis (Miami, Fla.) led Hanover's defense with nine tackles. Junior lineman John Holtkamp (Indianapolis, Ind.), senior linebacker Brandon Foster (Haubstadt, Ind.) and junior linebacker Justin Magaw (West Palm Beach, Fla.) all collected seven stops.
