Women's soccer knocks off Capital

Freshman forward Anna Cornacchione (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored midway through the first half and junior Bianca Cotter (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored a security goal with less than nine minutes to play as the Hanover College women’s soccer team topped Capital University (Ohio), 2-0.

Capital, ranked No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region, falls to 5-2-1, while Hanover improves to 6-1-1.

The teams appeared even for most of the first half before Cornacchione collected a rebound off Elaine Simpson's (Lexington, Ky.) shot, driving the ball to the left corner to put the Panthers ahead 1-0 at the 23:56 mark.

Both teams had five shots in the first period, with Capital goalie Maggie Donnellan collecting four saves before intermission.

Capital appeared to push the offensive tempo in the second half, tallying 10 shots in that time. Hanover freshman keeper Karlee VanDerWeele (Argos, Ind.) earned four of her game-high five saves during this period.

Cotter sank a goal at the 81:11 mark, her first of the year, to put the game out of reach despite five Capital shots in the final five minutes.

Cornacchione notched her second goal of the season to tie sophomore Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio) for the team lead.
