Midfielders Matt Grau (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Matthew Eldridge (Louisville, Ky.) scored first-half goals to lead Hanover College’s men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory at home against Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.).
Eldridge, a freshman, weaved through traffic and eventually fired from 20 yards out to into the lower left corner of the net to put Hanover on the scoreboard in the 26th minute.
Grau, a junior, bumped the margin to 2-0 with a goal in the 40th minute. He scored on a header into the bottom right corner off a cross from senior forward Cory Jones (Danville, Ky.).
The Panthers’ defense limited Birmingham-Southern to just seven shots in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Trevor Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a pair of saves.
Hanover, meanwhile, fired 23 shots, including 10 shots on goal. The Panthers outshot Birmingham-Southern 10-2 in the decisive first half.
Senior forward John Wittich (West Chester, Ohio) led the attack with nine shots, including three headers over the cross bar in the second period. Eldridge, who now has two goals this season, had five attempts.
With the victory, Hanover is now 4-5-1 overall this season. Birmingham-Southern, winless in its last four outings, dips to 6-3-1.
