Hanover College’s men’s soccer team snapped an 11-match winless streak against Transylvania University (Ky.) with a 1-0 victory in Lexington, Ky.
Freshman forward Matthew Eldridge (Louisville, Ky.) scored late in the 17th minute and Hanover’s defense limited Transylvania to a season-low four shots while posting the Panthers’ first victory in the series since a 3-0 triumph, Oct. 28, 2003 (0-10-1).
Hanover’s attack was stifled into just two shots by the Pioneers. Eldridge, who leads the Panthers with four goals this season, fired both of Hanover’s shots in the match. He scored on his first attempt and was wide right with a shot in the 87th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Trevor Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) had saves on three of Transylvania’s four shots.
The Pioneers earned a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Both teams were whistled for 11 fouls and each received a yellow card.
The victory marks the third in a row for Hanover, now 6-5-1 overall this season. The Panthers ascend to first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 2-0 league record.
Transylvania, 4-0-1 in its previous five outings, fell to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC.
