Hanover College’s women’s tennis squad snagged sole possession of first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 5-3 triumph against Transylvania University (Ky.) at the Zeddies Tennis Center.
With its fifth win in its last six outings, Hanover raised its record to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the HCAC. The setback was the first of the season for Transylvania, now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Hanover opened the battle with victories in the two of the three doubles matches.
Senior Danielle Miller (Fairway, Kansas) and freshman Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned an 8-6 win against the Pioneers’ Laila El Dessouki and Claire Mielcarek at No. 1 doubles. Sophomores Kelsey Jones (Hanover, Ind.) and Alexis Taylor (Frankfort, Ky.) teamed for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 against Savanna Barnett and Taylor McCreary.
The Panthers sealed the triumph with wins in three of the five completed singles battles.
Sophomore Allison Poston (Attica, Ind.) swept Transylvania’s Jessica Shotwell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, while Taylor rebounded to defeat Victoria Haugli 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
Jones locked up Hanover’s victory, and ended its four-match skid against Transylvania, with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 against Barnett.
The No. 1 singles match with Miller and the Pioneers’ Mielcarek was halted by darkness with Miller leading 6-4, 4-5.
