Freshman soccer player Matthew Eldridge (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore tennis player Alexis Taylor (Frankfort, Ind.) have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s athletes of the week in their respective sports.
Eldridge scored two game-winning goals to lead Hanover’s men’s soccer team into first place in the Heartland Conference standings.
He scored in the 17th minute to propel the Panthers to a 1-0 victory at Transylvania University (Ky.), Oct. 8. He hit the back of the net seven minutes into overtime to lift Hanover to a 1-0 win against Anderson University, Oct. 12.
The victories pushed Hanover to the top of the HCAC standings with a 3-0 record. The Panthers, 7-5-1 overall, will host Earlham College, Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Taylor helped Hanover’s women’s tennis squad lock up a share of the Heartland Conference’s regular-season title with wins against Transylvania and Manchester University.
Taylor rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 singles and also paired with sophomore Kelsey Jones (Hanover, Ind.) for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to help seal a key 5-3 win against Transylvania, Oct. 9.
She spurred an 8-1 win against Manchester Oct. 12 with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles and an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles with Jones.
