The Hanover College women’s tennis team remained perfect in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play defeating Franklin College 5-4 to clinch the regular-season conference title. The match was held Wednesday, Oct.16 in Franklin, Ind.
The Panthers fell behind early in doubles play, with the duo of sophomore Allison Poston (Attica, Ind.) and freshman Mallory Noble (Fishers, Ind.) capturing the lone victory with an 8-1 win against Franklin's Chelsea Howell and Alison Meyer at No. 2.
Down 2-1 at the start of singles play, the Panthers roared back with four individual victories.
Freshman Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted a 6-0, 6-3 win against the Grizzlies' Bethany Harris at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Alexis Taylor (Frankfort, Ind.) defeated Emily Roberts 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3.
Poston followed her doubles victory with a singles win, beating Alison Meyer 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.
With the match tied 4-4, sophomore Kelsey Jones secured the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Franklin's Shawnee Bayes at No. 5.
With the victory, the Panthers improve to 11-3 and 8-0 in the league. The effort matches the school record for wins in a season, set by the 1995, 1999 and 2001 squads.
Hanover will be the No. 1 seed in the Heartland Conference tournament. The two-day event, held at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind., begins Saturday, Oct. 19, with the Panthers playing at 2 p.m. against the winner of an opening match between Transylvania University (Ky.) and Anderson University.
This is the fourth HCAC title for the program and their first since 2008.
