GREENWOOD, IN- The 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament will be held, Nov. 5, 9-10. The opening round will start Tuesday, Nov. 5, with opening round matches played on the campus of the higher seed, while the semifinals and championship will be held at Defiance College (Ohio).
Defiance claimed the school’s first Heartland Conference volleyball crown to earn the right to host the tournament. The Yellow Jackets finished the season 23-5 overall and 9-0 in conference play, closing the regular season with a 12-match winning streak.
Transylvania University (Ky.), 23-11 overall and 8-1 HCAC, earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament due to a loss to Defiance in the regular season. Both teams earned a first-round bye after earning the top two seeds in the tournament and will play separate semifinal matches Saturday, Nov. 9.
In the opening round, Nov. 5, Bluffton University (Ohio), 13-18 overall and 4-5 HCAC, earned the No. 6 seed and will at No. 3 College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio), The Lions (16-16; 7-2 HCAC) beat the Beavers, 3-1, Oct. 9 in conference play.
Bluffton closed the season with only one win in its final four matches, while Mount St. Joseph went 7-3 down the stretch.
The winner will advance on to play Transylvania at 5 p.m., Nov. 9, in Defiance, Ohio. The Pioneers swept Bluffton and beat Mount St. Joseph 3-1 during the regular season.
Hanover (14-15; 5-4 HCAC), the No. 5 seed in the tourney, will take on No. 4 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (15-17; 5-4 HCAC) in the second opening-round match.
Rose-Hulman defeated the Panthers 3-2 Oct. 12 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Engineers enter the tournament winning three of their last four matches, while Hanover has won five of its last seven matches heading into the event.
Defiance has the right to play the victor between the Engineers and Panthers, Nov. 9. The Yellow Jackets swept both during conference play.
The championship match will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m.
The tournament champion will earn the Heartland Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The event is slated to begin on Friday, Nov. 15.
