Record victory puts Hanover in HCAC finals

Sophomores Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sirena Isadore (Cincinnati, Ohio) each scored goals to lead Hanover College’s women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the semifinals of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

Hanover set a school single-season record with its 16th victory. The Panthers, now 16-1-2 this season, also set school marks with the team’s eighth consecutive victory and 14-match unbeaten streak (12-0-2).

Freshman Rebecca Tumlin (Harrison, Ohio) bounced a blast off the cross bar midway through the seventh minute. Alvis chipped in the deflection near the left post to give Hanover an early 1-0 lead.

Isadore capped the scoring with a goal late in the 84th minute. She punched the ball into the net from a crowd in the box for her third goal of the season.

Hanover earned a 21-8 advantage in shots. The Panthers controlled possession in the second period and managed a 14-3 margin in shots through the final 45 minutes.

Tumlin fired six shots to lead the Panthers’ assault. Alvis, who has six goals this season, had three shots along with freshman Anna Cornacchione (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Sophomore goaltender Morgan Cole (Mason, Ohio) had a pair of saves.

Hanover will host Transylvania University (Ky.) in the Heartland Conference championship at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9.

The squads have tied through two overtimes in three of their last four meetings, including a 1-1 clash Oct. 9 in Lexington, Ky.

The Panthers' 16 victories surpasses the 15 tallied by the 2011 team. That unit posted a 15-3-2 overall mark and earned Hanover's first berth in the NCAA III national tournament.
