Junior guard Alicia Hopkins (Columbus, Ind.) matched her career best with 23 points, but Hanover College’s women’s basketball squad fell to Adrian College (Mich.), 92-86, in the Besuden Classic in Lexington, Ky.
Hopkins was one of four players to reach double figures for Hanover, which slipped to 0-2 with the setback.
Junior guard Shauna Watson (Fort Wayne, Ind.), sophomore guard Kelsey Block (Madison, Ind.) and freshman guard Jessie Davidson (Lexington, Ind.) each tallied career highs in the setback. Watson netted 15 points, Davidson had 13 and Block scored 11.
Junior forward Caitlin Bishcoff (Atlanta, Ind.) pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds.
Adrian (1-1) led by as many as 13 points in the second half (58-45) before Hanover rallied to grab the lead. The Panthers used a 28-7 run to build a 73-65 advantage with 8:18 remaining in the game.
Block scored nine of her points and Hopkins added six points to fuel the Panthers’ burst.
Adrian, however, scored eight straight points to tie the contest at 73-73 with 5:34 to go.
Davidson hit a bucket and added two free throws to help Hanover surge ahead 81-77 with 3:55 left.
The Panthers held on to an 83-82 lead after a Davidson drive to the hoop with 3:10 to play.
The Bulldogs closed the game with a 10-3 run. Hanover missed four consecutive field goal attempts and turned the ball over three times down the stretch.
Adrian used the drought to convert six-of-six free throws in the final 40 seconds to seal the win.
LaQwana Dockery posted 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Lauren Rhodes added 22 points to lead four Bulldogs in double figures.
The Panthers shot 41.7 percent from the floor (30-of-72) and hit 20-of-25 free throws (80%).
