Hanover College’s softball team dropped both games of a non-conference twinbill against Wilmington College (Ohio) in Wilmington, Ohio.
Hanover, now 6-6 overall this spring, fell 11-5 in the opener and lost 10-1 in the nightcap.
The Panthers trailed 9-1 after four innings in the first game, but rallied with four runs in the top of the fifth to trim the margin to 9-5. Wilmington, however, added a run in the fifth and sixth innings for the final margin.
Junior rightfielder Chelsie Nuhring (Lynnville, Ind.) notched her second career three-hit game and tallied three of Hanover’s seven hits. She finished 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Sophomore second baseman Lyndsea Burke (Modoc, Ind.) was 1-for-3 with a walk, double, two runs-batted-in and one scored. Freshman leftfielder Michaela Corbin (Kendallville, Ind.) had a double, knocked in one run and also scored a run.
Freshman hurler Anna Phillippe (New Palestine, Ind.) suffered the loss after allowing 12 hits and nine runs in three and one-third innings.
Senior Ashley Cochran (New Albany, Ind.) and freshman Mattie Varvel (Fillmore, Ind.) combined for two and two-thirds innings of relief. The duo surrendered three hits and a pair of runs.
Hanover's offense was limited to only a second-inning base hit by Nuhring in the second contest.
Wilmington (6-5) led 8-0 after two innings and raised the margin to 10-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth.
The Panthers used two walks, a wild pitch and an infield grounder to plate a run in the top of the fifth.
Junior hurler Christina Davidson (Cincinnati, Ohio) was pegged with the loss. Davidson gave up nine hits and eight runs in one and two-thirds innings.
Cochran worked the final two and one-third innings, allowing four hits and two runs.
