Softball caps season with losses to Anderson

Hanover College’s softball team capped its season with a pair of losses to Anderson University in a Senior Day twinbill at Southwestern High School in Hanover, Ind.

Hanover dropped the opener, 9-0, and fell in the second contest, 6-5, in eight innings. The games mark the final appearances for seniors Ashley Cochran (New Albany, Ind.), Megan Hogston (Aurora, Ind.) and Shelby Overton (Greenwood, Ind.).

The Panthers were outhit 12-5 and committed three fielding errors in the six-inning loss to open the doubleheader.

Anderson scored twice in the first inning and added two more runs in the third to build a 4-0 lead. The Ravens added a run in the fourth and fifth innings, then three in the sixth for the final margin.

Sophomore designated hitter Victoria Wilson (Camby, Ind.) had two of Hanover’s hits in the contest.

Junior pitcher Leah Kemmerer (North Vernon, Ind.) was tagged with the loss, despite leaving the game in the top of the third after suffering an injury. Kemmerer (14-4) allowed four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.

Freshman Anna Phillippe (New Palestine, Ind.) tossed two and two-thirds innings in relief, giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Cochran threw the final one and one-third innings. She surrendered three hits and three runs.

Hanover rallied from a 4-0 deficit to force an extra inning before falling 6-5 in the second contest.

Wilson belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Panthers within 4-3. The dinger was her team-leading fourth of the season.

After Anderson added a run in the seventh to ease ahead, 5-3, junior shortstop Danielle Merrick (Eminence, Ind.) hit a single up the middle to score two runs in the bottom of frame to send the game into extra innings.

Anderson (26-7; 15-1 HCAC) plated a run in the top of the eighth, then put the Panthers down in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.

Junior Christina Davidson (Cincinnati, Ohio) suffered the loss after pitching all eight innings. Davidson (3-9) surrendered 12 hits and five earned runs. She walked two and had one strikeout.

Wilson had two of Hanover’s six hits.
