The Hanover College women’s tennis team will face Sewanee University (Tenn.) in the opening round of the 50-team NCAA III tournament. The Panthers and Tigers will battle at 9 a.m., Friday, May 9, at Emory University (Ga.) in Atlanta, Ga.
Hanover, making its first NCAA tournament appearance, has a 15-5 overall record. The Panthers captured the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s title in the fall with an 8-0 record. The squad posted a 5-1 victory against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the league's Oct. 20 tournament finale.
Sewanee, a member of the Southern Athletic Association, is 20-3 overall and ranked No. 20 in the nation. The Tigers earned the SAA tournament crown with three straight wins, including an 8-1 victory against Berry College (Ga.) in the league championship.
Sewanee is making its second consecutive appearance in the national tournament. The Tigers advanced to the third round last season.
The winner of the Hanover-Sewanee match will face No. 19 Washington and Lee University (Va.) in the second round. The Generals are 17-2 overall and captured the program’s 12th consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference title to earn an automatic berth in the field.
Washington and Lee defeated Sewanee, 7-2, when the teams met April 17 in Sewanee, Tenn.
The bracket also features a first-round clash between Berry (17-2) and Methodist College (N.C.), which posted a 22-2 mark this season. The winner will face host No. 1 Emory (23-2) in the second round.
The NCAA III championship is slated for Wednesday, May 21, in Claremont, Calif.
