Hanover College’s women’s golf team posted a 358 in the first round of the NCAA III championship. The opening round of the 72-hole tournament was played at the Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeon Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Junior Brooke McKay (Carmel, Ind.) and sophomore Erika Shepherd (Jeffersonville, Ind.) each scored in the 80s to lead Hanover.
McKay fired a 13-over-par 85 on the 5,844-yard course. She was six over after the first five holes, but rallied with five pars and one birdie through the rest of the round. Shepherd posted an 89, including pars on five holes through the back nine.
Sophomore Brittany Gingerich (Millersburg, Ind.) shot a 43 on the front nine, including birdies on holes seven and eight, and finished with a 91. Freshman Devan Smith (Depauw, Ind.), who posted a 41 on the back nine, capped the Panthers’ scoring with a 93.
Sophomore Brittany Mosteller (Indianapolis, Ind.) added a non-scoring round of 104.
Hanover will open the second round at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 14. Mosteller will tee off first for the Panthers and be followed every 10 minutes by Smith, Shepherd, Gingerich and McKay.
