Faculty Position Information

We want all applicants for faculty positions at Hanover College to have the following information about the College and to know the expectations for teaching in the framework of the College's mission:

Hanover College is a liberal arts college committed to being one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation dedicated to exploring fundamental questions and the great issues of our time. The College serves about 1,000 students on its residential campus, which is located on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River in southern Indiana, less than an hour from downtown Louisville, less than two hours from Indianapolis and an hour and a half from Cincinnati. The academic year is divided into two terms of 14 weeks in which faculty normally teach 3 courses each term and one 4-week term in May in which each faculty member teaches just one course.

Hanover College is dedicated to the creation of a distinctive intellectual community within which students are challenged and nurtured to take responsibility for their learning and their lives and to develop their unique abilities to their highest levels. To achieve its goals, Hanover offers an intensive first-year experience; an interdisciplinary set of common requirements that integrate writing and speaking into all courses; majors that emphasize engaging students in the intellectual work of the discipline, including original student scholarship; off-campus opportunities that immerse students in a culture significantly different from Hanover's; and a capstone experience that involves an intensive interdisciplinary examination of a significant issue of our time. Hanover offers rich cultural opportunities for self-designed student learning throughout the curriculum. Hanover expects faculty to be able to mentor students on their own research and encourages faculty who wish to incorporate students as collaborators and co-authors in the faculty member's research. To support these goals, Hanover emphasizes close faculty-student interaction and has a generous student-faculty ratio (currently 9.5 to 1).

Quality of teaching is the central factor in hiring and tenuring faculty. Scholarship is an expected part of a faculty member's role and is supported and encouraged by the College. All faculty serve the College by supporting programs within the academic department, advising students, participating in campus governance and contributing to the life of the community.
