Meet the President - Dr. Sue DeWine

President Sue DeWineDr. Sue DeWine became the 15th President of Hanover College July 1, 2007. As the former Provost of Marietta College in Ohio, President DeWine has had a successful career in academe and has extensive experience as an administrator, fund-raiser and communication consultant.

"I am honored to accept the presidency of such an outstanding college as Hanover," said DeWine. "I have been familiar with Hanover for some time and know that it enjoys a national reputation for quality education. I look forward to getting to know the faculty, students and employees of Hanover and moving the college to the next level of excellence."

Phillip Scott '64, chairman of the Board, made the announcement of her appointment following a special meeting of the Board in March. "Dr. DeWine's engaging personality immediately won the unanimous support of the search committee. We are confident that she will build on the successes of the past 20 years to take Hanover to new heights of academic excellence and financial strength," said Scott.

Serving as the chief academic officer at Marietta since 2000, DeWine oversaw all academic and support units, including the library, academic resource center, continuing education and graduate programs, international students and programs, records and registrar, career center and grants office.

She guided the implementation of major general education revision with a cross disciplinary focus and worked with officials on implementing a $1.7 million grant for technology training. She also worked to gain improvement in a faculty development and rewards structure and worked to establish new undergraduate and graduate degree programs in such areas as physician assistant studies, psychology and corporate media.

"Sue has been an agent of change, an outspoken advocate for faculty and academic programs, a problem solver for students, a vibrant leader on campus and in the community and a confidante for me as president," said Marietta President Dr. Jean Scott, in a prepared statement. "She has made her mark on almost every aspect of Marietta College's life, including the general education curriculum, the hiring and development of faculty, strategic planning, designing a new library and center for teaching excellence and accreditation.

DeWine was a professor at Ohio University from 1985-2000 in organizational communication and research and consulting. She served as director of the School of Interpersonal Communication from 1988-2000. She received the Elizabeth G. Andersch Award for scholarship, teaching and leadership and the Robert J. Kibler Outstanding Professional Award for dedication to excellence and acceptance of diversity, vision and forthrightness from the National Communication Association.

She has served as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, government, and educational institutions on subjects such as communication and conflict, strategic planning, and facilitating off-site team building meetings. A well-published author, she has written more than 60 communication-oriented books and professional articles, and over 100 convention papers and programs.

Dr. DeWine was the keynote speaker at the Aspen Conference on July 28th. The conference theme was "Transforming Organizations and Engaging Theory: Diverse Lenses, Diverse Engagement". This is a conference for organizational communication scholars and organizational leaders. DeWine's keynote address focused on "Higher Education and Community Engagement: It's time to do meaningful research."

She is also a co-author of a book just published by Allyn and Bacon titled: "Organizational Communication: Foundations, Challenges, and Misunderstandings." This is the second edition of this popular text for organizational communication classes in colleges and universities across the country. Her co-authors are Dan Modaff and Jennifer Butler, colleagues at Ohio University. In this second edition, DeWine has written a new chapter on Leadership, which was published in July 2007.

DeWine earned a doctorate in interpersonal and organizational communication and counseling psychology from Indiana University in 1977. She received a master's in rhetoric and public address from the Miami University (Ohio) in 1967 and a bachelor's degree in English and speech education from Miami in 1966.

Married to Mike DeWine, a retired science teacher and longtime medical educator, they are the parents of two children. Son, James, resides in Seattle, Wash and pursues a career in computer animation. Daughter Leigh Anne lives in Washington, D.C. and is a lawyer interested in international human rights law.
