Greeks Earn Big Points

Nearly half of Hanover's student body is a member of a fraternity or sorority. To join, a student needs to have a minimum 2.25 (fraternity) or 2.5 (sorority) and the requirements become tougher once they become a member. These students make up some of Hanover's best and brightest.

Six chapters achieved a chapter average GPA of a 3.0 or higher during the Fall 07 term.  "This is a great accomplishment and it has been many years since our fraternities have achieved as a group at this level," said Deanne Walters, assistant director of Greek Life. Walter cited several chapters, including Phi Delta Theta, with an almost 0.2 percent improvement in their GPA from this time last year.

Each chapter has different individual requirements regarding a member's GPA.  These requirements may be set by the inter/national organization or by the chapter. Additionally, the inter/national organization usually has requirements for the chapter's performance as a whole. These range from a set GPA to campus comparisons such as, chapters must meet or exceed the all-men's average on their campus.

In other Greek news, she added that Sigma Chi doubled their membership so far this year. Nearly half of all Hanover students joined a Greek house this fall (48 percent) but while this number is slightly lower than in previous years, it is due to the large number of Greek men who changed to alumni status (rather than active status) this summer and are not included in the total count.

Even though the total numbers were down, recruitment is on the rise. Fifty-five percent of eligible first year women joined a sorority as did 58 percent of eligible men.
