The President's Message (excerpt)
by Russell Nichols
When I was a boy, my grandmother sometimes would say to me, "You're in a real pickle now, aren't you?" She meant that I was in the uncomfortable position of wanting something that I thought at the time was really important, like that new bike, but I didn't want to do the dirty work, like clean the barn, to earn it. Facing difficult choices left me in a "pickle." If Grandma were here today, she would say that education in America is in a real pickle.
In this report, I invite you to think with me about a larger issue facing Hanover College and all of American education. As regular readers of this space know, I like to extrapolate from individual decisions to institutional choices, especially lessons for colleges and universities, with observations on Hanover's role in providing creative solutions to society's problems. So let's consider this "pickle" American education seems to be in, and let me thank you at the conclusion for being a part of the solution that Hanover provides.
