Capstone Faculty Colloquium

Water: The Rise and Fall of Civilization
Discussion Leader: Karen Porter
Date: September 5, 6, 7, 2008
Location: Galt House, Louisville
Readings: Water:  The Fate of Our Most Precious Resource by Marq De Villiers and The Reader, a collection of writings from our 2008 Fall Symposium speakers.

Launched in January 2000, the Faculty Colloquium is designed to foster interdisciplinary, liberal arts inquiry among Hanover College faculty. Once a topic and readings are chosen, Hanover College faculty are invited to apply to participate. Several faculty members are selected from the registrants and supplied with the reading. The participants are taken on a two-and-a-half-day retreat, where they participate in the kind of freewheeling, cross-disciplinary inquiry that defines the liberal arts. The work of the colloquia can range from the discussion of a book, to scientific lab or field work, to ventures in artistic appreciation or expression. This colloquium will give Hanover faculty an opportunity to practice what they preach about the liberal arts, and explore topics which may lie outside their disciplinary expertise, in the company of colleagues bringing a wealth of perspectives to the common endeavor.
