What Hanover Medieval-Renaissance Studies Offers
Hanover College is the only higher education institution in Indiana, public or private, that offers a major in Medieval-Renaissance Studies. The program provides excellent preparation for students interested in advanced studies in literature, history, religion, and law. Medieval and Renaissance culture lies at the root of most modern cultures of the Western world. The period had a profound impact on Western society's current literature, philosophy, art, religion, and politics. By studying the ideas of the Medieval and Renaissance periods, students are able to gain a clearer understanding of the world we live in today.
Engage in Classical Greek and Medieval philosophy, Renaissance and Restoration literature, Middle Age and Renaissance history, medieval poetry, and the works of Chaucer taught and read in Middle English. Study abroad opportunities are also available in England and Italy.
Students declaring this major must first have their major programs approved by the Medieval-Renaissance Committee before entering their junior year.
Highlights
One-of-a-kind Curriculum
The Medieval-Renaissance studies program at Hanover College is an interdepartmental major focusing on the thirteen centuries that make up the Renaissance and Middle Ages. You will get to design your own major focusing on your interests including English literature, history, art, music, and philosophy. Take classes in Arthurian legends, Chaucer, Florence in the Age of Dante and Petrarch, the medieval cathedral, and the late Roman empire through the Reformation. Directed study opportunities include Norse legends, J.R.R. Tolkien as medievalist, Old English language and literature.
Spring Term Abroad
Students can study "Shakespeare in England" in Stratford-upon-Avon or "The Age of Dante and Petrarch" in Florence, Italy. These courses allow you to explore great literary works in two of Europe's most beautiful cities.
Diverse Faculty
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, students are exposed to faculty members with a broad range of perspectives and academic specialties. Specialties of faculty members range from the history of the High Middle Ages to Renaissance Art and Architecture and Medieval Philosophy to European Art.
Small class sizes
Our small class sizes also allow you to form a close friendship with other students with interests similar to yours. There are regular medieval movie nights and students dress in medieval costumes for Halloween.
Career Opportunities
Medieval-Renaissance studies within the context of a liberal arts education equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to continue on to a variety of careers and/or graduate school opportunities.
