Cody's First Blog Entry
Welcome, everybody, to my blog on Hanover's site! Just to kick things off, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in Elizabethtown, Ky., but I have lived most of my life in Frankfort, Ky., which is just about one and a half hours south of Hanover. Along with my parents, I have an older brother, who now lives in Huntington, W.Va., with his wife, an older sister, who now lives in Lexington, Ky., with her husband, and my little sister, who is still in high school. Family is certainly one of the most important things in my life. I feel truly blessed to have the support and love from my family.
Certainly, the greatest support I have, though, is from my girlfriend, Shelley, who is a senior at Hanover this year. Shelley and I met at our Episcopal church in Frankfort many years ago and have been dating for the last 6 years. Shelley is my better half, therefore, if you become a common reader of my blog, you might read about her as much as you read about me!
I'm a junior and beginning to gear up for my senior year. I am also a psychology major and a scholar in the Center for Business Preparation (CBP). For many students at Hanover, including myself, this is one of the busiest, yet best times of the year, both with academics and extra-curricular activities. For example, since winter 2006, I have been an active member of my fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. In my current role as president, I have the responsibility of leading this great chapter of the national fraternity and try to focus a large amount of my time in doing so.
We are just a day away from our annual formal, held in Indianapolis this year. Formal is a great experience, as we will celebrate our brotherhood by enjoying one another's company as well as the company of our guests during an amazing weekend and a great dinner and dance on Saturday. Not only will we recognize the new associates of the chapter, we'll also begin to say good-bye to our large class of seniors. I am deeply invested in Lambda Chi right now, so I'll keep you updated on such activities.
Finally, I am eager to do this blog for a number of reasons, but the number one reason is to let you, the reader, share the many experiences that I have had and will have at our wonderful college. I want to tell you why Hanover means so much to me and show you how so many students can benefit and love Hanover as well. There are MANY more activities and experiences that I will blog about besides Lambda Chi, including my trip this coming spring term trip across the Southwest, academic life, and my daunting task of running the 15 K, or 10 mile, leg of Louisville's Triple Crown at the end of March (I better start training for that!).
I will write each week about a variety of things so stayed tuned. And PLEASE let me know if there is anything you would like me to write about! Feel free to email me at, davism@hanover.edu. Be sure to read next week!
Cody's Blog - April 08, 2008 Updated
Hi all! Just a quick update to let you know how things are going. We're wrapping up the winter semester here at Hanover and currently we're in the middle of dead week, the week before finals when most papers and presentations are due.
A lot of exciting things are coming up in the near future for me all because of the opportunities that Hanover has given me. In just a couple of weeks, I am traveling down to Clearwater, Fla., for spring break with many my fraternity brothers and all of our girlfriends. This is kind of the hot spot for Hanover College students going on spring break this year. It will be great!
Also, spring term is right around the corner. Unfortunately, I'll miss the event of every spring term, wiffleball! This philanthropic event is a wiffleball tournament sponsored by my fraternity that lasts about 2-3 weeks long and attracts the whole campus, students, faculty, and staff. Instead of playing for my wiffleball teams, I'll travel to New Mexico with a sociology/anthropology class studying the cultural adaptations of Native Americans. I can't wait for this experience and I'll be sure to post some pictures.
And I recently got my internship this summer through the Center for Business Preparation (CBP). I'll workg for Family Counseling of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., this summer where I will be able to sit in on some counseling, do some psycho-education of my own, and even write up a grant proposal in an effort to gain some funds for a program attacking childhood obesity and the psychological causes for the phenomenon. This will be a great way to learn if clinical psychology is really what I want to go into and all thanks to the CBP.
Finally, Shelley and I finished our 15K (10-miler) which was part of the Triple Crown of Running in Louisville, Ky. Our goal was to finish under two hours and we met our goal crossing the finish line in 1 hour and 58 minutes. Close one, I know… Though that isn't the best time, for only training for four weeks, I'm pretty proud. Anyway, if you're around Hanover and are experiencing the same weather we are, go out and enjoy it! This is my favorite time of year at Hanover because the campus is so beautiful. Write to you later!

The second half of winter semester leading up to spring break and spring term always seems like a blur. Last weekend I attended the Lambda Chi Alpha Formal held at the Sheraton Hotel at Keystone in Indianapolis. As always, it turned out to be one of the best times of the year, even though Mother Nature tried to slow us down by putting 14 inches of snow and ice in Hanover! Regardless, everybody traveled safely and had a great time.
As far as academics, due to a cancellation of classes right before our Winter Break, a number of students (including me) had to take mid-terms after we returned. In the last few weeks, I've had my midterms in both of my Natural World courses (Biology 165 and neuropsychology). Natural World courses are required for both my major and the Hanover LADR's (liberal arts degree requirements). The big focus in Neuropsych right now is the conditioning of and then extinction of the behavior in our lab rats. Pinky, my partner's and my rat, is doing great (though a little slow like the original Pinky) and has gained 200 grams since his first weigh in of 100 grams!
My rat has learned how to press the bar to get his own food out and then I had to conduct an extinction of his behavior by setting the conditioning chamber (Skinner Box) to release no food pellets when Pinky hit the bar. Now I just have to write the lab report coming up pretty soon and explain the method and results of the various experiments I conducted with our rat.
Lambda Chi had a great event at our house on Friday. We brought in the country music band, Midnight Rain, which was amazing! This was our country-themed social event and Midnight Rain is a great cover band we bring out every year. I put on my cowboy hat, my boots, and my belt and had a great time listening to the music and hanging out.
I'm gearing up for another week at Hanover, waiting for it to warm up a little and turn into spring in just a few days. The beautiful landscape at Hanover is wonderful during every season, but spring is definitely my favorite time. It's time to start getting outside again in the Lambda Chi side-yard or The Quad and start passing that frisbee or baseball and before you know it we'll have...Wiffleball! Stayed tuned and you'll hear plenty about that. Have a great week and happy spring!
