Junior Year

Shane Henshaw is a junior from Shelbyville, Ky. In his second year at Hanover, he

"In coming to Hanover I was initially concerned with its small size and close proximity to my hometown. However, I have come to realize that Hanover has presented me with a multitude of opportunities for exploring various endeavors and areas of study that I would otherwise not have had, as well as presented me with a tight knit community where students and teachers are in continuous interaction. In my short stay here, I've been able to engage in a wide array of athletic and social interactions, which serve to compliment Hanover's well established academics. I have studied topics ranging from the development of Western Culture, to the history and mysteries of the Orient, to the complexities of the human mind, to the beautiful intricacies of the calculus, and I'm only in my second year.

What I enjoy most about Hanover is the ability to truly delve into assorted areas of study that enables me to not only develop a more well-rounded education but also allows me to discover an area of study truly suited for my personal interests. I have been able to explore economics, psychology and anthropology before finally deciding that I most truly love both the simplicity and complexity of mathematics. I also have grown fond of the manner in which Hanover utilizes its athletic programs to complement its academics rather than overshadow them. Having said all this, I would like to assert that perhaps the most wonderful aspect of Hanover is its people. The atmosphere allows for students to grow very close and develop lifelong friendships as well as develop strong, working relationships with both faculty and the administration."

With only one week left in the winter semester the stress level of students is reaching a climax as final exams lurk in the minds of all on campus. This week will prove to be one of the most tumultuous of the entire year but luckily, we will have our reward with our long-awaited spring break. I have exams Monday, Thursday and Friday with Thursday presenting the most important exam in Algebraic Systems. While studying for finals will be daunting, I stay motivated by knowing that Friday evening I will leave for a much-needed spring break.

This year I am going with some friends to Gulf Shores and while there probably will not be any other college kids down there due to the unconventional timing of our break, I am still looking forward to getting away. This past week I dedicated my time to wrapping up classes in the ways of homework and projects, while also wrapping up our spring soccer season. Saturday, we had a scrimmage against Bellarmine U. in Louisville and although we lost the game, I thought our team had a decent showing. I was fortunate enough to score, which made it all the more sweet because I am friends with several of the guys at Bellarmine. That is all for this week as I need to get back to studying, but good luck to everyone on finals and to everyone else, have a good week.

They say that people hate Mondays. Of course, I am not sure how "they" became the delegated group to barrage us with an excess amount of clichés and proverbs that attempt to comment on the social views of the time, but today I am inclined to agree with "them." It is 10:30 a.m., I have not been to sleep yet, the weather is miserable and I just got out of a test, heck of a way to start the week. I guess the good news is though the worst is over; I am done with class by noon and have practice to look forward to and a long nap thereafter, so at least my Monday will be short lived.

Now that I am done venting I really do not have a lot to say this week as last week was fairly uneventful and besides studying for my test and watching basketball I did not have the chance to really do anything this past weekend either. This coming week, however, should be different.

With one test down in my abstract algebra class already, I have a test in Calc III Thursday, and by the end of the week, I will have begun working on my final project for computer science where we have to design a simple videogame or simulation program using Python.

I'll also continue with soccer this week as we countdown the days until our friendly game with Bellarmine and Spalding. While spring season does not really count for anything, it is still exciting to know that we are returning the core of our team from last season, so the additional training will only help to strengthen that core for next year. Also, we are bringing in some freshman next fall who will hopefully be able to help the program right away. After a season of failure, mediocrity, and underachievement, along with everyone else, I am all too ready to prove ourselves within the HCAC and dethrone Transy from their place at the top. Well that is all for now, I hope to have more for you next week and remember, "What ain't no country I ever heard of" -Jules.

Hello again folks and welcome back to your weekly update in the life of a Hanover student. Not much has happened since we last spoke. Classes have been about the same except for some new developments in my computer science class, but I will talk a little bit about that later.

First things first. Last week I mentioned that my IM basketball team was scheduled to play in the final four of the tournament and it is to my great disappointment (can you hear the hint of sarcasm?) that we suffered a tough loss in a tightly contested game. This is the second year in a row we have been one game away but let's be honest, IM sports are not meant to be taken seriously; they are meant for clowning around, which is fun. Although, it would be sweet to get that free t-shirt awarded to the champions.

Other than that, I am actually at a loss for words. I will say I am looking forward to this coming weekend because there will be two real parties for the first time in a while on campus, plus I believe some soccer recruits will be staying for the weekend.

Now allow me to change subject matter abruptly. As I mentioned earlier, my computer science class is starting to become a bit more interesting so I figured I would take the time to talk about what we have been doing recently for anyone interested in the program. Last week we turned in our first project, where we used Python to program graphics and animations, and I must say it was fairly entertaining. You would not believe how much work even the simplest animations require.

For my project, I did a simple, and I do mean simple, recreation of a scene from the game Super Mario Bros where Mario runs across the screen, jumps over a pipe and a goomba, who then tragically falls into a gap and off the screen. If anyone is interested you can actually see the code for my program if you click on the picture at vault.hanover.edu/~henshaws/shane.html.

If that does not sound very interesting you still may want to check out the website, as that is what we have been working on in class this week. Like I said, we have begun working with html documents and that site is my first attempt. While the content is not necessarily gripping, since the assignment was to make a mock resume in order to get acquainted with html, the page should still give a good indication of the type of work you can expect to do in an Intro CS class. Also, I hope to display some of my artwork soon from my Drawing I class on the page but that might not be for another week or so. Well that is about it for now, everyone have a good week and if you are from around here, enjoy the snow.

It is Super Bowl Sunday and I spent three forth's of the game doing homework. You got to love being a Hanover student. At least I got to see the end of the game, which proved to be one of the most spectacular endings in Super Bowl history, but that is neither here nor there. It has been way too long since my last post and much has been going on.

This semester may prove to be my most difficult yet, due to the combination of my classes and having class at 8:00 a.m. every morning (I know I should not complain but that does not change the fact I am not of fan of waking up early). I am taking Into to Computer Science, which should be renamed Intro to Python Programming on account that all we do is make simple, borderline useless programs using Python (obviously not my favorite class), Algebraic Structures, Discrete Mathematics, and Calculus III. The latter three are all very interesting albeit very difficult, but that is not a bad thing by any means and that is one of the reasons I do like these classes. I had three tests last week and one more on Tuesday, which should give me an early indication of how the semester is going so far.

Outside of class things have been going very well. A few weeks ago our fraternity got our new pledge class, and I must say that we got a group of very solid guys. The night of the run is always one of the best nights of the year and this year was no different. It is a night in which you really see the brotherhood aspect of being in a fraternity.

Also for the past few weeks intramural (IM) basketball has been going on, which is both hilarious and fun. Outside of whiffleball, basketball is probably my favorite IM sport. As always, my IM team consists of soccer players and this year, we are the number one seed in the tournament. We'll play in the final four on Tuesday night so wish us luck. More than likely we will need it, I mean after all we are soccer players, using our hands is not one of our strong points.

This past weekend some of the guys from the soccer team and I competed in an indoor tournament at Asbury College. We finished 3-1 and came in second place. We should have won but Ilnick made us late to our first game, resulting in a loss (ha, come on Ilnick). Even though we did not win it was still fun to have a chance to compete in the off-season. With only one season of soccer left I can honestly say I don't know what I will do when my soccer career is over. Well, that is the past few weeks of my life in a nutshell and hopefully I will not wait so long to report in again. As always, happy hunting and I'll be in touch.

While it has been some time now since my last post all has been well at the Hanover home front. Fresh off a very relaxing Thanksgiving break students now begin preparing for finals and the end of the fall semester. Although we must only endure two weeks until finals I fear these may be the two most strenuous and daunting weeks of the semester. Not only will I integrate everything I have learned in each class and prepare for finals, I will also face two exams this coming week in Calculus II and Linear Algebra with a comprehensive self-analysis due next week for my Personality Theory class and two-portraits due for my Drawing I class. However, with soccer over I should have ample time to devote to my studies, although I can not honestly say studying is how I prefer to spend my time. Now that I have made Hanover seem like the most dismal and miserable place on the planet I should regress and say that while we are undoubtedly pushed to work hard there are still plenty of opportunities to relax and spend time with friends.

Changing the subject away from school let me say that I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, which is easily one of my favorite holidays. My family started the holiday off by playing our annual football game down in Louisville where separate sides of the family have competed for bragging rights for more than 20 years. Although our side of the family has not faired so well in recent years the game is still a great chance to see everyone and enjoy the day. After the game, we traveled to Owensboro, Ky., to visit my Dad's side of the family where we feasted like royalty and enjoyed each other's company. With Thanksgiving now over and Christmas right around the corner we should all be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us and take time to bring a little joy and holiday spirit to all those not as fortunate. Best wishes to everyone and good luck to all the students as we enter the proverbial crunch time.

Welcome back, it has been a couple of weeks since my last blog and much has happened in terms of school, soccer and my life in general. As far as school goes things are as hectic and interesting as ever; in the past two weeks I have experienced my first exam of the year, started working on a new art project and have delved even deeper into the material in my mathematics classes.

This past Tuesday I took my first exam of the semester in my Personality Theories course and it proved to be very in depth and challenging. I want to say that I believe it went well but being superstitious of the big-speech I will just have to wait until I see the results first-hand. Going along with the exam, I saw the completion of my brown gloves composition in Drawing and believe that they turned out nicely, full of movement and zest. Now having completed two compositions, we have just started drawing a brown paper bag that will test all the skills and techniques we have learned thus far in the course.

While I remain excited about school, the primary excitement of the past two weeks has come from soccer and my personal life. Although the soccer season has gotten off to a rocky beginning, we now find ourselves 2-1 in conference play, with victories over Bluffton and Anderson, and only three wins shy of the conference tournament. Among our matches I was able to tally goals four and five of the season and hope to build on those as we approach the heart of the conference season, ultimately helping the team to our second consecutive conference tournament appearance.

In our latest result, we posted a 5-1 routing of Anderson, which was especially great as we played it on my 21st birthday. Unfortunately, I was not able to really go out and celebrate because of soccer but being able to just kick it with my good friends and being able to head home Sunday to visit my family and neighbors has been good-enough for me. Some friends of mine from Bellarmine and Centre also came up to visit for my birthday during the week and I would like to say thanks for making the trip up and thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, especially the lovely ladies who made those delicious cupcakes. I am very excited about turning 21 and look forward to many more enjoyable years to come. With so much going on I can only hope things stay as great as they are now, best wishes to all and until next week…
