College Life in 1949

1949-Memories of Hanover

Hanover football (3 seasons), taking care of faculty lawns one summer, preaching at area churches on Deputation Teams, working for Dutch Struck and driving him to meetings and speaking engagements, river boat trips, looking for morel mushrooms with future spouse (Lucy Gilbert), snack and conversations Phi Mu Lodge, engagement serenades outside Donner Hall, getting married in Hanover Church.
-Raymond Bowden

Dorm life in Donner Hall; bridge games in the Cabin; walking on the beautiful campus; and some wonderful teachers who helped me more than I can say.
-Sally Snowden Downey

Grateful and understanding faculty and administration welcoming flood of returning WWII veterans.
-Carter Elliott

We were freshmen when the guys returned from World War II so we saw a tremendous difference in the student body, the facilities, the faculty, and the activities. I enjoyed being engaged in many extra-curricular activities, participating in Phi Mu events, and getting pinned by my Beta sweetheart. We were married in 1949 after my graduation. Gus remained a student and a member of the basketball and track teams until his graduation in 1951. My association with Hanover actually lasted six years. We both loved the Hanover setting, the spirit, and the students and faculty. Great memories!
-Mary Margaret Mills Moorhead

I was only at Hanover for two years but established that have lasted a lifetime in addition to having found my wife of 60 years.
-Paul Peddie

When I entered Hanover in the fall of 1945, enrollment was less than 200 and the building program had not yet started. Donner Hall, College Point House Science Hall, the Library, Field House, Newby Infirmary, the YMCA building. fraternity and sorority ho

Excitement with being accepted at Hanover as a discharged veteran, never dreaming of going to college. College boat rides in the spring, unique to the campus setting. Small classes - individual attention from professors and their encouragement especially Dr. Austin. The beauty of the campus and the setting above the river. Fraternity brothers who have been life long friends, fraternity activities while on campus. Required attendance at chapel everyday, even the time the alarm clocks were set to go off at different times interrupting the speaker. The time all of hymnals were secretly removed before chapel. Had a campus romance that culminated into 60 years of marriage.
-William Wendt

The friendliness of the campus, small classes and caring professors who could call you by name in a short time, being a member of the college choir and concerts we gave in Cincinnati and Indianapolis, being on campus when new buildings emerged and the landscape changed, boat rides in the spring, sorority sisters who have been life long friends, formal dances in the Fall and Spring, fraternity pin serenades, asking a certain sig to a dance and he became my best friend and loving husband for 60 years.
