1954 Memory Book

College Life in 1954

Enrollment was 596 with a faculty and staff of 51 and 3 part-time instructors on a campus of 300 acres.  New buildings that were erected while this class was on campus were Ide Hall, the President's Home, the new Library, and three sorority houses.

Tuition was $400, room was $140 to $240, board was $360, and fees were $45 per year.  There were lab fees for certain courses.  For every 15 absences from class, one semester hour was added to the requirement for graduation for that student.  A student absent from the last recitation before a recess or the first recitation after a recess in any course received double cuts.  Assembly for all students was held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 9:40 a.m.  After ten absences from campel, .05 was deducted from a studen'ts grade point average for each absence.

Dorms closed on Monday through Thursday at 11:00 p.m., except after Hanover dances when dorms closed at midnight and after dances held in Madison when dorms closed at 12:45 a.m., and on Sunday at 10:30 p.m.  No social events were allowed to be held on Monday morning through Friday noon.

Quiet hours were from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. and <:namespace prefix = st1 /><:namespace prefix = st1 /><:namespace prefix = st1 /><:namespace prefix = st1 /><:namespace prefix = st1 /><:namespace prefix = st1 />1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday, from 7:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Monday through Thursday, and before 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.  No telephone calls were allowed during these hours.  No typing permitted after 11:00 p.m.1954--Memories of Hanover

Dean's permission, as well as a sign-out card, was required for all trips out of town, excluding Madison.  Permission had to be obtained from the Dormitory Chariman for all trips to Madison and for all evening absences from the dormitory except when attending regular organized meetings or all-college functions

Late permission (a one hour's extension for closing) was granted to seniors once a week, to juniors twice a month, and to sophomores once a month, but could not be taken after a dance.<:namespace prefix = o /><:namespace prefix = o /><:namespace prefix = o /><:namespace prefix = o />

No dates were allowed during the week except between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. for all freshmen girls.

Smoking was allowed only in private rooms in the women's dormitories.

Students were not to have pets, firearms, intoxicating beverages, or electrical appliances.  Electric razors were permissible.

In order to have a car on campus, a student had to keep it in good condition, maintain a good academic standing, and have a place off the street to park it.  Freshman were not allowed to have cars on campus.

Hanover Traditions: There was no smoking on campus.  There was no athletic activity on Sunday.  Freshmen wore their "beanies" with pride.  Girls wore sweaters and skirts while boys wore sport shirts and presentable trousers.
