Panthers fall in first appearance at Victory Field
Hanover College's baseball squad opened a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series with a 4-0 loss to Franklin College Thursday, May 1, at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Ind.
Franklin's Andy Clark tossed a complete-game two-hitter to blank the Panthers. Clark, a senior, tied a school record with 14 strikeouts in the nine-inning contest. He did not issue a walk.
Senior catcher Rob Gumerson (Greenwood, Ind.) smacked a single down the right field line in the third inning for Hanover (9 -26; 3-18 HCAC). Sophomore shortstop Adam Miller (Franklin, Ind.) had a two-out base hit for the Panthers in the seventh inning.
Franklin (23-12; 14-6 HCAC) snapped a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Grizzlies added two more runs in the sixth inning.
Freshman hurler Evan Frick (Indianapolis, Ind.) worked the first five innings on the mound for Hanover. Frick (1-4) scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs. He walked just one and posted four strikeouts.
Sophomore Nik Kahl (New Albany, Ind.) pitched three innings of relief. Kahl limited the Grizzlies to one hit and one run. He also tallied a pair of strikeouts.

Four-hitter not enough in 4-2 loss at MSJ
Hanover College's baseball squad dropped a 4-2 decision to the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio), Tuesday, April 29, in Amelia, Ohio.
Hanover pitchers Jim Peck (Shelbyville, Ind.) and Kyle Lawson (Hope, Ind.) combined on a four-hitter, but it was not enough to lift the Panthers to a victory.
Peck (2-3) allowed just four hits through six and one-third innings. He gave up three earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Lawson tossed one and two-thirds innings of hitless relief.
Hanover scratched the scoreboard in the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Will Pappano (Tell City, Ind.) was hit by a pitch, stole second and later scored from third base on a wild pitch to give the Panthers an early, 1-0, lead.
Mount St. Joseph tied the game in the third inning. The Lions jumped into a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Hanover (9-25; 3-17 HCAC) eased within 3-2 in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Pappano.
Mount St. Joseph (21-15; 13-5 HCAC) added an insurance run in the seventh inning.
Sophomore shortstop Adam Miller (Franklin, Ind.) and freshman catcher Andy Holzbog (Huntingburg, Ind.) combined for four of Hanover's eight hits. Miller doubled in the fourth inning for the Panthers' only extra-base hit.

Rose-Hulman completes three-game HCAC sweep
The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology completed a three-game sweep of Hanover College's baseball squad with two wins Saturday, April 26, in Terre Haute, Ind.
Rose-Hulman edged Hanover, 2-1, in the first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tilt. The Engineers (26-9; 13-4 HCAC) handled the Panthers, 9-5, in the second contest.
Sophomore pitcher Nik Kahl (New Albany, Ind.) limited Rose-Hulman to just five hits in the opener but still suffered the loss in a complete-game effort.
Hanover led 1-0 ofter five innings, but the Engineers laced together three hits and used two errors to score two runs in the sixth inning to rally to post the victory.
Sophomores Will Pappano (Tell City, Ind.) and Adam Miller (Franklin, Ind.) combined for four of the Panthers' seven hits. Pappano, an outfielder, had two singles and knocked in a run. Miller singled twice and scored Hanover's run.
Kahl (2-4) tallied one strikeout. Neither of the runs he allowed were earned.
In the second game, Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and used three runs late in the game to hold off Hanover's rally.
The Panthers plated one run in the fourth inning and added four runs in the fifth to creep within 6-5 at the game's midway point. Freshman catcher Andy Holzbog (Huntingburg, Ind.) keyed the comeback attempt with a three-run homer. The dinger was his third of the season.
Holzbog and freshman outfielder Jason Crawford (Indianapolis, Ind.) had three hits apiece to lead Hanover, which totaled 10 hits in the contest. Pappano, who has hit safely in his last seven games, added two hits for the Panthers.
Sophomore hurler Jacob Schwartz (Russiaville, Ind.) picked up the setback after three innings on the mound. Schwartz (3-7) gave up seven hits and six runs. He walked two and had one strikeout.

Hanover (9-22; 3-14 HCAC) grabbed a 1-0 on a run-scoring single from sophomore shortstop Adam Miller (Franklin, Ind.) in the top of the fourth inning. Rose-Hulman rallied with a three-run fifth inning to bolt into a 3-1 lead. The Engineers' Alex Decker keyed the outburst with a two-run single.

Hanover sweeps twinbill from Cincinnati-Clermont
After a week off for final exams, Hanover College's baseball squad stepped back into action with a doubleheader against the University of Cincinnati-Clermont College (Ohio), Friday, April 18, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover swept both games from Cincinnati-Clermont, now 5-10 on the season. The Panthers (8-20) posted a 9-4 victory in the opener and blanked the Cougars, 5-0, in the nightcap.
In the first game, freshman Evan Frick (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Jim Peck (Shelbyville, Ind.) combined on a three-hitter to lead Hanover, which has won four of its last five outings.
Frick (1-2) allowed three hits and four earned runs in six innings on the mound. He walked six and tallied seven strikeouts. Peck tossed a hitless seventh inning.
Freshman second baseman Clay Slaughter (Indianapolis, Ind.) and senior third baseman Nick Bundy (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined for five of Hanover's 10 hits.
Slaughter, who was 2-for-3, jacked a three-run homer in the Panthers' five-run second inning. He also had a run-scoring double in the fourth inning. The home run was the first of his collegiate career.
Bundy was 3-for-4 with four runs-batted-in and two scored. He knocked in two runs with a single in the second inning and hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning.

Hanover College's baseball team split a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Defiance College (Ohio), Saturday, April 12, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover, now 6-20 overall and 3-12 in the HCAC, posted a 5-2 win in the first contest. Defiance (5-15; 1-10 HCAC) coasted to a 9-3 triumph in the second game.
Sophomore designated hitter Chris Neumann (Villa Hills, Ky.) and freshman catcher Andy Holzbog (Huntingburg, Ind.) combined for four of Hanover's six hits in the first game.
Neumann singled and later scored in the second inning. He smacked a run-scoring double in the Panthers two-run third inning. Holzbog led off the fourth inning with a solo home run - his second dinger of the season. He also had a second-inning base hit.

Ninth-inning rally lifts Hanover to victory
The Hanover College baseball squad scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally for a 7-6 victory against Defiance College (Ohio). The contest, played Friday, April 11, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex, was the first in a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series.
Sophomore outfielder Nik Kahl (New Albany, Ind.) hit a two-run double and later scored the game-winning run from third base to lift Hanover to the victory. The triumph snapped the Panthers' six-game losing streak and raised the squad's record to 5-19 overall and 2-11 in the HCAC.
Defiance fell to 4-14 overall and 0-9 in the Heartland Conference.
Hanover trailed 6-3 heading into its final at-bat. Freshman outfielder Cody Fink (Mount Vernon, Ind.) and sophomore outfielder Will Pappano (Tell City, Ind.) were each hit by pitches to open the inning. Fink scored on a one-out double by freshman second baseman Clay Slaughter (Indianapolis, Ind.). Kahl followed with a two-bagger to push Pappano and Slaughter across the plate to tie the game.
Kahl, who later advanced to third base on a fielder's choice, raced across the plate on an infield error on a grounder by freshman catcher Andy Holzbog (Huntingburg, Ind.).
Kahl was 3-for-5 with two runs-batted-in and two runs scored for Hanover, which totaled 15 hits and had six players with multiple hits. Sophomore designated hitter Chris Neumann (Villa Hills, Ky.) had a run-scoring double in the third inning and belted a two-out, solo home run in the eighth inning.
Sophomore David Oliver (Evansville, Ind.) earned his first victory of the season with one inning in relief of starter Jacob Schwartz (Kokomo, Ind.). Oliver (1-1) pitched a hitless ninth inning. He walked two and had one strikeout.

Skid reaches six after HCAC losses to Transy
Hanover College's baseball squad dropped two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference outings against Transylvania University (Ky.). The twinbill was played Tuesday, April 8, in Louisville, Ky.
Transylvania improved to 18-6 overall and 6-3 in the HCAC after a 14-5 win in the first game and a 10-7 triumph in the nightcap. Hanover, which has lost its last six contests, dipped to 4-19 overall and 1-11 in the league.
Transylvania collected 17 hits in the opener. The Pioneers led 7-4 after three innings and outscored Hanover 7-1 in the second half of the game.
Sophomore first baseman Michael Smith (Fort Thomas, Ky.) led Hanover with two hits. Sophomore designated hitter Chris Neumann (Villa Hills, Ky.) had a run-scoring triple and sacrifice fly and also scored one run for the Panthers.
Freshman pitcher Ben Kleber (Seymour, Ind.) fell to 0-2 on the season after working five innings on the mound for Hanover. Kleber scattered 12 hits and allowed eight runs. He had two strikeouts and issued one free pass.
In the second game, Hanover tallied 10 hits but left 15 runners on base and committed three errors in the 10-7 setback. The squad combined for nine extra base hits in the game, which included 10 pitchers between the two teams.

Anderson University's baseball squad completed a three-game sweep of Hanover College with a 5-4 victory Sunday, April 6, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Anderson (16-7; 6-1 HCAC) outhit Hanover, 15-5, but committed five errors in the nine-inning contest. The Ravens built a 4-1 lead after batting in the fifth inning, then held on for the triumph after the Panthers pulled within 5-4 in the sixth inning.
Freshman catcher Andy Holzbog (Huntingburg, Ind.) smacked his first home run of the season. His solo homer put Hanover on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Adam Miller (Franklin, Ind.) doubled and later scored in the fifth inning for the Panthers.

Hanover was limited to just five hits by Mount St. Joseph's Todd Schwertman, who pitched eight scoreless innings for the Lions (10-9; 6-2 HCAC). Schwertman scattered five hits and tallied eight strikeouts. Steve Matre tossed a hitless ninth inning for Mount St. Joseph.

Hanover College's baseball squad avoided a series sweep, and snapped its six-game losing streak, by splitting a twinbill with Bluffton University (Ohio). The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader was played Saturday, March 29, in Bluffton, Ohio.
Hanover posted a 6-5 victory in the nine-inning second contest. Bluffton edged the Panthers, 5-4, in the first game of the day. All three contests in the series were decided by one run.

Hanover and Bluffton combined for just 13 hits in the game, but the teams totaled nine runs in the third inning. The outburst proved to be the only runs of the game.

The teams combined for 27 hits in the contest. Hanover, which defeated the Saints, 7-3, March 17, totaled 12 hits in the outing.
Thomas More (3-5) jumped out to a 5-0 lead with the aid of two doubles and a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Hanover (3-11) eventually grabbed a 7-6 lead after plating three runs in the third and fourth innings.

A five-run inning helped Hanover College's baseball squad post a 7-3 victory against Thomas More College (Ky.). The nine-inning tilt was played Monday, March 17, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover (3-7) snapped a 2-2 tie with five runs in the decisive seventh inning. The Panthers collected three of the team's seven hits in the inning and also benefitted from an error and two wild pitches.
Thomas More (1-5) outhit Hanover 8-7 in the contest. The Saints stranded nine base runners, while the Panthers left seven runners on base.
Freshman third baseman Jason Crawford (Indianapolis, Ind.) had two hits for Hanover. Sophomore outfielder Nik Kahl (New Albany, Ind.) doubled and scored two runs. He knocked in a run in the first inning and was hit by a pitch and eventually scored in the seventh inning.
