Hanover vs. Davenport (1), Feb. 22

Davenport edges Hanover in inaugural contest
The Davenport University (Mich.) baseball squad opened its inaugural season with a 1-0 victory against Hanover College. The game was played Sunday, Feb. 22, as part of the Russ Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.

Junior pitcher Jake Schwartz (Kokomo, Ind.) was tagged with the loss despite allowing just six hits and one run through five innings on the mound. Schwartz (0-1) walked one and had two strikeouts. He surrendered Davenport's earned run in the third inning.

Junior outfielder Will Pappano (Tell City, Ind.) collected three of Hanover's seven hits in the contest. Pappano, who batted .252 for Hanover last season, was 3-for-4 in the season-opener for the Panthers, which left eight runners on base.

Davenport plated the game-winning run with three base hits in the third inning. Outfielder David Stuppy knocked in the run with a one-out single and was thrown out advancing to second base.

Brandon Romero earned the victory for Davenport with a complete-game seven-hitter. He walked two, but tallied five strikeouts.
