Turnovers doom Hanover in loss to MSJ
The College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) set a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record with seven interceptions and knocked off Hanover College's football squad 37-19. The contest was played Saturday, Oct. 18, at L.S. Ayres Field.
Hanover, now 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the HCAC, outgained the Lions by a 484-474 margin. However, freshman quarterback Nick Sharp (Indianapolis, Ind.) was picked off seven times among his 69 passing attempts. Turnovers led to 17 first-half Mount St. Joseph points.
Mount St. Joseph built a 30-lead before Hanover mounted a challenge. Junior running back Josh Juett (Owenton, Ky.) rambled into the endzone from three yards out to get the Panthers on the scoreboard with 11:56 left in the contest. Juett hit paydirt again with 5:42 to go, hauling in a five-yard touchdown pass from Sharp to pull Hanover within 30-12.
Following a Mount St. Joseph fumble, the Panthers cut the margin to 30-19 with a four-play, 53-yard scoring drive. Freshman receiver Daniel Passafiume (Louisville, Ky.) snagged a 12-yard touchdown pass from Sharp with 4:29 left.
Mount St. Joseph entered the game with the Heartland Conference's top scoring defense, allowing just 10.2 points per game.
The Lions' Jake Davis, who banged his way to 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns, scored on a one-yard plunge with 2:38 remaining for the final margin.
Sharp finished the game 41-of-69 for 476 yards and two touchdowns. Mount St. Joseph's defense had been surrendering just 125.2 passing yards per contest.
Passafiume caught 11 passes for 146 yards and the touchdown - the first of his Hanover career. Senior receiver Tyler Thiems (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the Panthers' receiving corps with 13 catches for 174 yards.
Junior linebacker Daniel Cornely (Palmetto Bay, Fla.) paced Hanover's defense with 14 tackles. Freshman defensive back Xavier Jackson (Stuart, Fla.) had 12 stops and two pass deflections. Freshman defensive back Rory Mannering (Walton, Ind.) and sophomore linebacker Michael Spillmann (Franklin, Ind.) added 10 tackles each for the Panthers.
