Mount St. Joseph stays perfect with league win
The College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) kept its record unblemished with a 28-13 victory against Hanover College's football squad Saturday, Oct. 17, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mount St. Joseph racked up 446 yards of offense and overcame four turnovers to raise its record to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Hanover, meanwhile, dipped to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the HCAC. The Panthers generated 354 yards of offense, including 112 yards on the ground and 242 passing yards, in the setback.
Mount St. Joseph piled up 239 rushing yards on 46 attempts in the outing. Running backs Noah Joseph and Jake Davis led the Lions' charge with a combined 203 yards on 36 rushes.
Davis put Mount St. Joseph on the scoreboard with an eight-yard run for a touchdown with 5:22 left in the opening period. Joseph added a 14-yard scoring run less than three minutes later to give the Lions a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
After a scoreless second period, Mount St. Joseph eventually stretched the cushion to 21-0 with a touchdown late in the third quarter. The Lions' quarterback Craig Mustard tossed a 45-yard scoring pass to Derick Tabar with 1:09 left in the period.
Hanover cut into the Mount St. Joseph cushion with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore C.J. Croft (Fort Campbell, Ky.) tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Adam Miller (Franklin, Ind.) to end the Panthers' drought just 1:03 into the final period.
Croft threw a 14-yard scoring pass to senior tight end Bobby Smart (Coral Springs, Fla.) to cut the Lions' lead to 21-13 with 5:24 to go in the contest.
Mount St. Joseph sealed the victory less than two minutes later. Davis capped a six-play drive with a 10 yard rumble into the endzone for the final margin.
Croft completed 23-of-41 passes for 242 yards with the two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked five times for 39 yards in losses.
Sophomore receiver Daniel Passafiume (Louisville, Ky.) led Hanover's receiving corps with 10 catches for 110 yards. Smart had eight receptions for 98 yards.
Freshman running back Colton Zeck (Galveston, Ind.) sparked the Panthers' ground effort with a season-best 71 yards on 12 rushes.
Freshman linebacker Andy Dalton (Guilford, Ind.) and senior defensive back Corry Stewart (Nashville, Tenn.) combined for 23 tackles and three interceptions for the Panthers' defensive unit.
Dalton racked up 16 tackles and one interception. Stewart had seven stops and picked off two Mustard passes.
