Third-quarter explosion powers Waynesburg win
Waynesburg College (Pa.) used a 28-point third-quarter outburst to pull away for a 49-21 victory against Hanover College's football squad Saturday, Sept. 12, in Waynesburg, Pa.

With the game tied at 21-21 early in the third period, Waynesburg (2-0) rattled off 28 unanswered points to post its third straight win in the four-game series with Hanover.

Hanover, now 0-2 on the season, racked up 423 yards of offense in the contest with 25 first downs. The Panthers, however, were stung by four interceptions and a lost fumble.

With Hanover driving on its opening series, Waynesburg defensive back Scott Cree snagged a pass from second-year quarterback C.J. Croft (Fort Campbell, Ky.) and rambled 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Yellow Jackets an early 7-0 lead.

The teams proceeded to exchange touchdowns until the middle of the third quarter. Waynesburg started its 28-point run with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Brad Dawson to Bobby Francis.

Croft, who has seven career touchdown passes against Waynesburg, connected on 23-of-41 passes for 286 yards with four interceptions and a trio of touchdown passes. Two of the miscues led to Waynesburg touchdowns. Croft also was sacked three times.

Sophomore receiver Daniel Passafiume (Louisville, Ky.) hauled in 11 passes for 98 yards to lead Hanover's receiving corps, which gained 317 yards in the contest. Senior Adam Miller (Franklin, Ind.) collected five balls for 92 yards. Both players had touchdown receptions.

The Panthers rushed for 106 yards in the outing. Sophomore running back Jeremy Cook (Batesville, Ind.) totaled 38 yards on 17 carries. He also caught three passes for 56 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown with just 17 seconds left in the first half.

Waynesburg totaled 525 yards of offense and converted 9-of-15 third downs against Hanover's defensive unit. Dawson finished the outing 20-of-31 for 362 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 163 yards.

Senior linebacker Daniel Cornely (Palmetto Bay, Fla.) and freshman Neil Johnston (Owensboro, Ky.) tallied nine tackles apiece to lead the Panthers. Johnston also forced a fumble.

Sophomore defensive back Rory Mannering (Walton, Ind.) added five stops, including a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery, an interception and two pass deflections.
