Panthers earn HCAC academic honors
Ten Hanover College student-athletes have earned academic honors from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The league announced its fall academic all-conference selections from each of its nine schools.
Hanover's fall academic honorees include junior football player Joe Vormohr (Portland, Ind.), senior cross country runners Jeremy Brownlee (Franklin, Ind) and Geoff Darmstaedter (Des Peres, Mo.), sophomore cross country runners Whitney Helton (Winslow, Ind) and Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.), sophomore soccer players Abby Simpson (Lexington, Ky.), Brandon Bottorff (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and J.P. Presley (Sunman, Ind.), and sophomore volleyball players Natalie Fansher (Noblesville, Ind.) and Megan Oilar (Noblesville, Ind.).
To qualify, the scholars must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and be a varsity athlete. The cumulative grade-point average is the student-athlete's level at the end of the semester preceding the close of the fall season. Scholars also must complete the equivalent of a full academic year and be enrolled on a full-time basis at the institution to be eligible for the academic honor.
Panthers wrap up season at Great Lakes Regional
The Hanover College women's and men's cross country squads wrapped up their 2008 season at the NCAA III Great Lakes Regional. The races, hosted by Otterbein College (Ohio), were held Saturday, Nov. 15, in Westerville, Ohio.
Hanover's women's squad finished 28th out of 34 teams with 823 points. Calvin College (Mich.) won the regional title with 42 points. Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) placed second with 84 points. Both teams secured an automatic berth in the NCAA III national championships.
Junior Angie Sells (Pekin, Ind.) paced Hanover by placing in 120th. Sells posted a time of 25:16.62 on the six-kilometer course. Freshman Sara Lucas (Avon, Ind.) was 144th out of 233 runners in 25:47.93. Sophomore Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.) turned in a time of 26:22.77 to finished 170th.
Oberlin College (Ohio) sophomore Joanna Johnson won the regional's individual championship. She covered the course in 21:51.76.
Hanover's men's team finished last among the 34 teams in the field with 1,034 points. Calvin totaled 37 points to win the men's team championship for the 13th consecutive year. Ohio Northern University was second with 88 points. Calvin and Ohio Northern each earned automatic berths in the national finals.
Sophomore Adam Kremer (Greenwood, Ind.) led Hanover's effort in the regional. Kremer placed 185th out of 240 runners with a time of 28:28.40 on the eight-kilometer course. Freshmen Andrew Kinman (Greenwood, Ind.) finished 202nd in 29:01.86. Senior Geoff Darmstaedter (Des Peres, Mo.) was 213th with a time of 29:26.14.
Calvin senior Jed Christiansen was the top individual runner for the second consecutive year. Christiansen, who placed 33rd in the national finals last season, won the regional with a time of 24:44.3.

Hanover harriers finish fifth at HCAC Championships
Both the Hanover College men's and women's cross country teams finished fifth overall at the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The meet was held Saturday, Nov. 1, in North Manchester, Ind.
Hanover's men's squad totaled 169 points in the race. Franklin College captured its first Heartland Conference title with 46 points, just edging the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's 48-point effort.
Freshmen Andrew Kinman (Greenwood, Ind.) led the Panthers with a 38th-place finish in 28:30.1. Sophomore Adam Kremer (Greenwood, Ind.) was 42nd with a time of 28:48.2. Freshman Peter Kassig (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed 49th out of 91 runners in 29:17.3.
Host Manchester College's Andy Williams won the conference's individual championship. He covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:37.5 to defeated Franklin's Brandon Welti by 12 seconds.
Hanover's women's squad totaled 126 points to earn its fifth-place finish. Franklin won the HCAC title with a 45-point outing. Manchester finished second with 49 points.
Junior Angie Sells (Pekin, Ind.) finished 18th out of 74 runners to earn honorable mention all-conference honors and lead Hanover. Sells posted a time of 24:58.9. Sophomore Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.) finished 21st in 25:10.2, while freshman Sara Lucas (Avon, Ind.) was 25th overall in 25:24.2.
Rose-Hulman's Melissa Rogers won the HCAC crown with a time of 23:32.7. Manchester's Jessica Bremer finished second in 23:52.9.

McLetchie & Kinman lead harriers at Wilmington
Hanover College's men's and women's cross country squads participated in the Wilmington College (Ohio) Fall Classic, Friday, Oct. 17, in Wilmington, Ohio.
Hanover's women's team placed seventh out of 24 schools in the five-kilometer race. The Panthers had three runners in the top 50 and totaled 217 points.
Sophomore Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.) paced Hanover's effort with a 30th-place outing in 20:26.84. Junior Angie Sells (Pekin, Ind.) finished 35th among 210 runners with a time of 20:36.72. Freshman Sara Lucas (Avon, Ind.) placed 47th in 21:02.42.
John Carroll University (Ohio) earned the women's team championship with 71 points. Denison University (Ohio) sophomore Katie Navarre won the individual title with a time of 18:22.14.
Hanover's men's squad finished 15th out of 23 teams in the eight-kilometer race. The Panthers totaled 460 points in the meet.
Freshmen Andrew Kinman (Greenwood, Ind.) and Peter Kassig (Indianapolis, Ind.) led Hanover in the race. Kinman placed 84th overall with a time of 28:03.18. Kassig was 107th out of 238 runners in 28:41.42.
Dension placed three runners in the top 10 and tallied 59 points to win the men's team crown. Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) sophomore David Mutusa won the race in 24:46.66.

Allegheny, MIT win Pre-National titles
Allegheny College (Pa.) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) earned team championships at the 2008 Hanover College Pre-National Meet. The event, a preview of the NCAA III National Championships, was held Saturday, Oct. 4, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

Allegheny, ranked 17th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCC) poll, totaled 62 points to win the men's crown.
Allegheny placed two runners in the top five spots and had five athletes in the top 21 positions. Junior Tony Dipre led the Gators with a second-place finish in 25:33.03. Sophomore Zac Ross finished fifth in 25:45.52.
Bethel University (Minn.) junior Dan Greeno captured first place in the eight-kilometer race with a time of 25:31.32.
Trinity College (Conn.) was second out of 20 men's teams with 106 points. Trinity had the seventh, eighth and ninth runners across the finish line. Freshman Mike Burnstein led the trio with a seventh-place finish in 25:50.29.
Host Hanover's men's team finished 20th overall with 650 points. Junior Justin Guilkey (Fort Thomas, Ky.) led the Panthers with a 150th-place finish in 28:54.69.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ranked 10th in the nation in the most-recent USTFCC poll, placed four runners in the top 15 slots and captured the women's team title with 70 points.
Junior Jacqui Wentz led MIT with an eighth-place finish in 22:47.18. Sophomore Anna Holt-Gosselin (23:05.38), senior Andrea Bradshaw (23:08.90) and freshman Janice O'Brien (23:10.67) placed 13th-15th, respectively for the squad.
Bethel, with four athletes in the first 19 positions, followed closely behind with 72 points. DePauw University finished third out of the 16-team field with 85 points.
Bethel junior Marie Borner won the six-kilometer race with a time of 21:24.27. The University of Wisconsin-River Falls ' Becca Jordahl was second in 21:27.99 and St. Norbert College (Wis.) junior Jenny Scherer placed third out of 172 runners in 21:36.36.
Hanover finished 15th overall with 435 points. Sophomore Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.) placed 80th in 25:39.72 to lead the Panthers.
Hanover College will host the NCAA III finals Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Ayres Complex.

Cross Country squads compete at Cedarville
Hanover College's men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Cedarville University (Ohio) Open, Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Elvin R. King Course in Cedarville, Ohio.
Hanover's men's squad placed sixth among seven teams with 182 points. Carnegie-Mellon University (Pa.) earned the team championship with 26 points. Carnegie-Mellon senior Brian Harvey won the race with a time of 24:57.04.
Freshmen Andrew Kinman (Greenwood, Ind.) and Alex Kain (Plainfield, Ind.) led Hanover's effort. Kinman placed 48th with a time of 29:07.27 on the eight-kilometer course. Kain, who finished in 29:41.75, was 54th out of 106 runners.
The Panthers' women's team totaled 114 points to place fourth out of a six-team field. Host Cedarville swept the top five positions to win the team crown with 15 points. The Yellow Jackets had seven of the first eight runners across the finish line, including junior Lydia Wong, who won the race in 18:31.42.
Three runners finished in the top 25 spots to spark Hanover in the five-kilometer race. Sophomore Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.) placed 20th with a time of 20:50.24. Junior Angie Sells (Pekin, Ind.) was 21st in 21:02.75. Freshman Sara Lucas (Avon, Ind.) was 22nd out of 83 runners in 21:06.09.

Stevens Point, Ohio Northern earn Kiwanis titles
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Ohio Northern University grabbed men's and women's team titles, respectively, at the 2008 Madison Kiwanis Cross Country Invitational. The annual races were held Saturday, Sept. 6, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Stevens Point junior Nick Schafer placed second overall and senior Dom Meyer was third to key the Pointers' 40-point effort in the meet. Schafer posted a time of 26:06.93 on the eight-kilometer course. Meyer finished in 26:12.73.
Huntington University's Nicholas Johnson was the first of the 156 runners in the field to cross the line. Johnson toured the course in 25:55.28.
Hanover placed 11th among 13 teams in the men's event. Freshman Andrew Kinman (Greenwood, Ind.) finished 93rd with a time of 29:22.91. Junior Justin Guilkey (Fort Thomas, Ky.) posted a time of 30:08.82 to earn the 108th spot.
Baldwin-Wallace College (Ohio) had the first two runners across the finish line in the women's five-kilometer race. However, Ohio Northern placed four runners in the top-10 to earn the team crown.
Baldwin-Wallace sophomore Kim Chinn won the race in 19:09.82. The Yellow Jackets' D'Arcy Hlavin was second with time of 19:34.16.
Ohio Northern junior Rachel Smith finished fifth in the 120 runner-field to pace the Polar Bears. Smith posted a time of 19:56.90.
Hanover's women's team was eighth out of an 11-team field. Sophomore Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.) led the Panthers with a 52nd-place finish in 21.33:39. Junior Angie Sells (Pekin, Ind.) was 54th in 21:36.61.

Harriers launch 2008 campaign at Franklin Invitational
Hanover College's men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2008 season by competing in Franklin College's Sodexho Grizzly Invitational. The races were held Saturday, August 30, at the Johnson County Horse Park in Franklin, Ind.
Hanover's women's squad placed third among five teams in the five-kilomter meet. Sophomore Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.) was the first of four Panthers in the top 20. McLetchie was ninth overall in 21:14.70.
Freshman Rachael Moreland (Lawton, Mich.) turned in a top-10 finish in 21:17.08. Freshman Sarah Lucas (Avon, Ind.) was 11th in 21:17.51 and junior Angie Sells (Pekin, Ind.) was 18th among 59 runners with a time of 21:44.43.
Hanover's men's team finished sixth out of a seven-team field. Junior Justin Guilkey (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and freshman Andrew Kinman (Greenwood, Ind.) led the Panthers' effort in the eight-kilometer race.
Guilkey was 30th out of 75 runners with a time of 29:48.26. Kinman placed 31st overall in 30:04.20.
Senior Geoff Darmstaedter (Des Peres, Mo.) finished in the 34th spot in 30:36.26.
