2009 season opens at Franklin Invitational
The Hanover College men's and women's cross country squads opened the 2009 season at the Franklin College Invitational. The annual event was held Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Johnson County Horse Park in Franklin, Ind.
Hanover's women's team finished fourth out of eight teams with 102 points. The Panthers' men's squad totaled 151 points to place seventh among eight schools.
Junior Shawna McCletchie (Lexington, Ky.) turned in an eighth-place finish to lead Hanover's women's effort. McLetchie posted a time of 20:20.68 on the five-kilometer course.
Sophomore Sarah Lucas (Avon, Ind.) placed 19th out of 72 runners with a time of 21:16.13. Classmate Rachael Moreland (Lawton, Mich.) was 22nd overall in 21:19.75, while senior Angie Sells (Pekin, Ind.) finished 24th in 21:37.92.
Wilmington College (Ohio) won the women's team crown with 30 points. Host Franklin was second with 44 points, while Campbellsville College (Ky.) finished third with 99 points.
Franklin's Heather Waterman finished first in the women's race with a time of 18:49.81.
Freshman Brock Harkness (Indianapolis, Ind.) led Hanover's men's team with an 18th-place finish. In his first collegiate outing, Harkness covered the eight-kilometer course in 28:35.07.
Sophomore Shawn Van Hoose (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) was 27th in a field of 84 athletes with a time of 29:22.30. Sophomore Chris Tookey (Washington, Ill.) placed 35th in 29:50.09, while senior Justin Guilkey (Fort Thomas, Ky.) was just .21 seconds behind in 36th place.
Franklin captured the men's team championship with 68 points. Earlham College placed second with 73 points and Wilmington was third with 79 points.
Wilmington senior Austin Stiles won individual honors with a time of 26:35.64.
