Hanover College’s softball team posted its first victory against Transylvania University (Ky.) in more than 12 years to earn a split in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill, Tuesday, April 24, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover tallied a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap to snap a string of 23 consecutive games against Transylvania without a victory. The win marked the Panthers' first against the Pioneers since March 30, 2000 (7-6).
Sophomore leftfielder Shelby Overton (Greenwood, Ind.) delivered the game-winner with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Transylvania would load the bases in the seventh, but freshman pitcher Christina Davidson (Cincinnati, Ohio) coaxed a ground ball for a force at the plate and a liner to right field to secure the win.
Davidson (6-12) limited the Pioneers to just five hits in a complete-game effort.
Transylvania snatched a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Hanover, however, answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Senior rightfielder Blakli Nading (North Vernon, Ind.) reached on an infield miscue and moved to second on a throwing error. Freshman catcher Breann Truelove (Loogootee, Ind.) followed with a base hit up the middle to deliver the game-tying run.
Overton lofted the decisive shot into the trees beyond the fence in left-center field. The homer marked her third of the season and sixth of her career.
The squads combined for 24 hits in the opener. Transylvania nursed a one-run lead after five innings, but scored three times in the top of the sixth to post a 7-3 win.
The Pioneers jumped ahead 2-0 in the third, but Hanover cut the margin in half with a run in the bottom of the inning. Freshman shortstop Danielle Merrick (Eminence, Ind.) hit a one-out single and later scored on a bases-loaded grounder by Nading.
Transylvania added two runs in the fifth to ease ahead 4-1, but the Panthers matched in their next at-bat with two runs to pull within 4-3.
Senior second baseman Lauren Kreinest (Harrison, Ohio) had a run-scoring single and freshman third baseman Abby Murphy (Richmond, Ind.) swatted a two-out double to knock in one run.
The Pioneers (18-16; 9-5 HCAC) collected four hits and plated three runs in the sixth inning to notch the victory.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Cochran (New Albany, Ind.) scattered 14 hits and allowed seven runs in five and two-thirds innings in the circle.
Davidson tossed one and one-third innings of hitless relief for the Panthers (10-24; 3-11 HCAC).
Kreinest and Merrick combined for five of Panthers’ 10 hits. Kreinest was 3-for-4 with one run-batted-in and one run scored. Merrick was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
