Hanover bumped from HCAC tourney

Hanover College's men's tennis team was knocked out of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship tournament in the opening round. The Panthers fell to Franklin College, 5-2, Saturday, May 5, at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind.

Senior Kyle Bohnert (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Max Erlewein (Cambridge City, Ind.) posted Hanover's two match victories.

Bohnert defeated the Grizzlies' Jared Hunt, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Erlewein handled Evan Pierle, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.

Franklin swept three doubles matches to gain an early advantage in the first-to-five format.

Bohnert and junior Steven Gilliam (Fishers, Ind.) dropped an 8-3 decision to Blake Wareham and Ryan Hammer at No. 1.

Senior Matt Strandmark (Madison, Ind.) and sophomore Brandon Ramsey (Centerville, Ind.) were beaten by Hunt and Brandon Roberts, 8-3, at No. 2

Junior Derek Zimmers (Liberty, Ind.) and freshman Austin Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.) fell at No. 3 to the Grizzlies' Cory Beeson and Luke Snyder.

In singles action, Strandmark lost to Robby Woehrle at No. 5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Veach was defeated by Roberts, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6.

Hanover caps its 2012 season 8-10 overall. The Panthers placed sixth in the Heartland Conference standings with a 4-5 record.
