Defense, rookie goal propel soccer in opener

Hanover College’s women’s soccer team opened its 2012 campaign with a 1-0 victory against Kenyon College (Ohio). The Panthers’ lid-lifter was played Saturday, Sept. 1, in Gambier, Ohio.

Freshman midfielder Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio) snapped a scoreless tie in the 53rd minute with her first collegiate goal.

Despite being outshot 15-9 and seven Kenyon corner kicks, Hanover’s defense kept the Ladies (0-1) off the scoreboard.

Senior goaltender Bethann Hancock (Lexington, Ky.) posted four saves through 90 minutes in the Panthers’ net.

Hanover was whistled for 12 fouls in the outing.

Alvis and freshman forward Anne-Spicer Adams (Midway, Ky.) led Hanover’s attack with three shots apiece.
