No. 13 Centre holds off women's soccer

Two early goals proved the difference as the Hanover College women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season. The Panthers fell to Centre College (Ky.), 2-1, Saturday, Sept. 15 at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

Despite limiting the Colonels' offensive attack to just 10 shots, Hanover had difficulty generating offense against 13th-ranked and unbeaten Centre (5-0).

Defense controlled much of the game, as both teams remained scoreless until Centre’s Mary Taylor Kersey headed Amy Hebbeler’s throw-in early in the 24th minute to nudge the Colonels ahead, 1-0.

Hanover sophomore forward Tricia Walsh (Amelia, Ohio) quickly responded with her second goal of the season, sinking an unassisted free-ball from just inside the box.

Hebbeler’s penalty kick score in the 35th minute proved the difference-maker, as neither team found the net in the second half.

Hanover tallied three shots on goal in the first period and one in the second, but were outshot by Centre with five in each half.

Senior goalkeeper Bethann Hancock (Lexington, Ky.) turned in two saves, as the Panthers fell to 5-1 for the season.
