Two goals by junior forward John Wittich (West Chester, Ohio) led the way, as the Hanover College men’s soccer team improved to 2-0-1 in its last three matches with a 3-2 against Alma College (Mich.). The contest was match in the 2012 Alma-Olivet Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 15, in Alma, Mich.
Hanover appeared destined for a tough match after Alma’s Matt Sovis netted an unassisted goal just 32 seconds into the match.
The Panthers, however, quickly rallied, scoring three straight goals in the first period to eventually outdistance the Scots (4-2).
Moments after the Alma goal, Wittich found the net on an unassisted shot late in the third minute. The teams traded shots, until Wittich buried his second goal at just under the 22-minute mark.
Sophomore defender Drew Servais (Carmel, Ind.) sank a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to put the Panthers up 3-1.
While Alma’s Joonas Kotka was able to convert a corner kick late in the first period, the Panthers' defense held strong in the second period and secured the win.
While Alma outshot Hanover 21-16, Hanover's sophomore goalkeeper Trevor Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) anchored the defense, collecting seven saves.
