Defense stifles Manchester in HCAC triumph

Hanover College’s women’s soccer squad opened Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action with a 2-0 triumph against Manchester University, Saturday, Sept. 29, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

Sophomore midfielder Erin Hancock (Amelia, Ohio) scored one goal and added an assist to lead Hanover to its third win in a row. The Panthers improved to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the HCAC with the victory.

Freshman forward Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio) put Hanover on the scoreboard in the 30th minute. Alvis popped a cross from Hancock over Manchester goaltender Emly Willmann for her fourth goal of the season.

Hancock bumped the margin to 2-0 with a goal in the 87th minute off assists from senior back Shannon Grueter (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore forward Hannah Barker (Carmel, Ind.). The tally was Hancock’s fourth of the season.

The Panthers’ defense clamped down on Manchester, limiting the Spartans to just three shots, including one shot on goal.

Hanover also had a 7-0 cushion in corner kicks.

The setback snapped a four-match unbeaten streak for Manchester (3-0-1) and dropped to the Spartans to 4-4-2 overall and 0-1 in the HCAC.
